Hoping for a bit of advice...

Hi,

I've been offered a laptop by a friend.. He's after £50 for it, the only problem he says is that it needs a new hard drive... So was looking at 160gb ones for a further £50... Totalling in £100 (obviously )

Now I was wondering if this laptop is worth £100... I can't seem to find much information on it, tried searching for reviews, the manufacturers website etc... But not an awful lot...

Its a Compaq Presario 2100 (2114EA)... Any sort of review I have come across has been for the 2100 in general but not the actual model I'm looking at... These reviews have been very mixed...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The reviews you found are generally the same model. The exact model number usually signifies where it was carried on retail stores or they added features for it. For example, Sager came out with the 9260 (in my sig). They have since came out with a 9261 and 9262 using the same chassis but adding new features, different cpu, more ram, etc. The base review should be a close match to your model. But I understand the frustration. Little changes to a model can make a big impact on performance.

In my experience, it's not a very good laptop. Even with its low-power cpu, I have seen them run hot, the fan gets kind of loud, and the screen is very washed out. My old college roommate had a very similar model to the 2114EA, only difference was it had more memory and a bigger hdd. That being said, £100 total is a good price for it, but don't expect to use it for anything more than word processing and web surfing.

Personally, I don't think it's worth it, since you can find faster and more mobile used notebooks for around the same price on ebay.
