Hacking my evo N1020v to include bt and wifi in the interior

Thread Starter
I recently inherited a compaq Evo n1020v P4. I really like the computer but I would like to make some changes. I would really like to have bluetooth and wifi built into the notebook itself. I use wifi when I work in offices and use bt to connect to my cell phone while traveling. I know that dongles and pc cards are pretty cheap but they "stick out" of the notebook and I move the notebook quite often. I have the following thoughts:

1. There is a space on the top of the notebook to install either bt or wifi. I believe there is no option to install both in that space, is that correct?

2. My dvd/cdrw is showing signs of wear...I have an external dvd/rw that I prefer to use. If I removed the dvd player is there any way to put the bt and wifi adapters in that space?

3. Is there any "empty" space in the notebook to allow me to install one or the other of these inside without further adaptions?

4. I almost never use the floppy drive...that would be a nice thing to remove. I have an external usb floppy anyway.

Any suggestions? I have hacked desktop systems to pieces but never have opened up a notebook.

i like ur idea of using empty spaces within the laptop to mod new devices in there. U can take ur comp apart and see where u can fit extra devices in. Share the pics, we can all chip in for ideas. Most likeky u might have to improvise (making mod to current) caddy/frame to hold ur new devices

But unless u r comfortable with electrical current and soldering and good tools to assist u, it will be quite an adventure

cheers ...

You can use the multiport adapter which is located on the cover with w200 wifi adpater. There a couple issues with this though. The first being the driver support. I could never get rid of the BSOD (blue screen of death). The card adapter would work but I would get the BSOD all the time and no matter what I did I could never get rid of it. Other than either physically removing the card or deleting it from the system properties. Supposedly The multiport was a new feature that Compaq was working on but then had got bought out by HP and HP canceled support on it. Take a look on the HP forums and you'll see how many have had problems with it. Some people though have been able to get it work with no problems. I though haven't been blessed.

If it works with your system the problem is that it only supports 802.11b which maybe fine for some but kind of out dated compared to the 802.11g and the new N that's out now.

There is another solution, but from I had heard that some of the current wifi cards in the newer systems may work. Such as part numbers 356667-001 and also 392557-001. I can not confirm this though. I currently purchased one and waiting for it to be delivered to try it out.

Now as far as space for it to be installed you can take the modem out and instal it in the that slot which is the mini pci slot. Then you wil have to route the antennas inside.

As far as bluetooth I know that Compaq was working on the multiport support for BT but that all I heard and never seen anything else about it.
