Replace hard drive with a cf card?

I am trying to get more battery life out of my notebook. I have a compaq evo n1020v, p4 2.4 ghz. As part of this objective I was thining about replacing the 40 gb hard drive with a 16 or 32 gb CF card. I have found an adapter for $8 that will hold 2 cf cards.

Has anyone tried this? If so, what were the results? Do you have any suggestions - either for or against this?

I am also hoping to be able to increase the boot up time as well...it would be nice to be able to burn the OS into the CF card.

I have Win XP pro now but am considering a jump to some flavor of Linux.

I remember this topic several times and the big drawback has always been that flash memory has a somewhat limited life span, no of writes before it dies. Also when an OS is running on a storage device, it reads writes quite often so it will eat through that lifespan very quickly. So if you don't mind replacing those cards however often then i suppose you could reduce some power comsumption.

i have done some reading on this idea, i was trying to find information about SSD's at the time. anyway, though it would lower power consumption it is an overall bad idea. the number of times as it has been pointed out that a flash drive can be written to is limited and the result of using an OS off that is that you will burn through cards at a termendous rate. as well, every time they die you will need to reinstall your OS, and also to pray that your data was all backed up somewhere else because otherwise it will all be gone.

in the end, a great thought, but not a good practical idea.

I remember years ago on the old techtv network, a show called screensavers somehow used a program to load an os into the ram, but of course when the machine was restarted, the ram clears, lol. I dont see why they couldnt make a device like this with a battery or something.

Thanks! I will look for other options. I remember in the first generation of color notebooks you could find utilities to change the color to monochrome and reduce power consumption that way. Will that work with today's screens?

Nice. I was hoping someone was working on that though at the rate it is going, i wont actually see it for a long time.
