I received this e-mail from AW this morning. They are telling me that IT WILL void your warrenty. See copy of e-mail below.

"Thank you for contacting Alienware.

I am very sorry to learn about the problem you are having with your system.

In this case, I suggest you contacting Area51_m15x@alienware.com.

They will provide you with a new BIOS version that will resolve the problem.

Once you have received the new BIOS, please contact our 24/7 Technical Support Department at 1-866-287-6727, option 2 in order to update your system's BIOS.

Please note that updating your system's BIOS without proper assistance from one of our phone representatives will void your warranty.

If you have any other questions or technical issues, please do not hesitate to contact us again, or visit our
Knowledge Base at http://support.alienware.com.

Thank you again for choosing Alienware and have a great day! "

And that is a direct quote from them.

Normally if you perform a BIOS flash by yourself it will void your warranty. In this specific case, flashing your BIOS to solve the downclocking issue will not void your warranty. If you have issues because of the BIOS flash and TS starts giving you trouble let me know, I will take care of it.

Thanks for clearing that up Steve!

Just a update. I installed the new BIOS update and it appears to have corrected my GPU downclocking issue. I had the AW tech on the phone during the update just to be safe. But it was no big deal. I was getting downclocking issues playing COD 4 but so far all is good. GPU temp max so far is 91.

just keep ur laptop elevated off the table with a book or something to get more air flow under to laptop helps alittle with temps...

Downclocking and overheating are some of the noticeable problems with the m15x and other systems using 8600,8700,8800,9600, 9800 cards. To address this issue DELL, Alienware, HP and other OEM's have released new updated BIOS versions that modify the fan profile in the system. (Alienware m15x x34 BIOS update)

The defective nVidia chips real issue though is a weak die/packaging material set, which may fail with GPU temperature fluctuations. (Fans running on high through the modified BIOS profile help to prevent weak die failures by preventing temp fluctuations). If your GPU fails, you may see intermittent symptoms during early stages of failure that include:
  • Multiple images
  • Random characters on the screen
  • Lines on the screen
  • No video
To help keep temps down, it is highly recommended to use a notebook cooler with twin fans that BLOW AIR UPWARDS. A 15" cooler can be modified for a 17" notebook.
