Let us add in the Condition Zero game that Counter Strike players have been waiting for since rumors came out over 3 years ago. It was relesed about 2 or so weeks ago to a silent opening and a disinterested audience. Even Far Cry and UT 2004 had better advertising and placement in stores.

Carmack has NEVER let us down.

We shall see won't we? I am honestly really hoping that this year is not a repeat of last year in both movies and games. Remember the Matrix indeed.

The difference will matter not only in future games, but in current games as well.

Tell me, can you run UT2K4 at native res (1680x1050 or 1600x1200) with 6xAA and 16x Quality Aniso? At good speed (60+FPS)? Didn't think so

Every speed bump will let you use higher and higher quality settings.
when your in 1680x1050 you dont need AA all you need is AF. and i had a gf 3 ti 200 and i could tell the dif when i got my 9800 pro with AF so i guess 4x af is good enough or w/e

Ladies,

I hope you all understand that Alienware will not be making much more than a few dollars on the 9700 modules.

It seems some of you think the release of this item will be some kind of windfall for them. On the contrary...

They have the upgradeable GPU to sell laptops NOT to sell video boards.

I have every faith that the 9700 will ship as soon as humanly (alienly?) possible.

I'd have to agree with Craig here.

Alienware is known for having the latest components as soon as possible, and they're also known for adjusting their prices to reflect thier cost to keep their pricing well below their competitors like Falcon Northwest and Voodoo. I'm sure the margins on this card will be the same as with any other hardware they offer.

AW also tests everything thoroughly to try to avoid issues. It hurts their reputation if customers have issues with hardware. And with the laptop, they have partners and aren't in control of the hardware as much as they are with desktops, so they have to be extra careful.

I'm sure they are very anxious to get this card out there, not only for sales, but to make sure their customers know they get the latest hardware in the unique drop in module as quickly as possible, but also that it's a performer and stable at the same time.

I hope they get both the 5700 and 9700 out soon...
Yeah, the pricing of the current modules is quite reasonable (190$ US for a 9600/5600 module I think), and certainly something like half the cost companies like Dell charge to upgrade the laptop when you are buying it. And in Dell's case since the laptop hasn't been built yet, their much higher price is on top of the money they save by taking out the lesser card.

Yeah, I do something like this and get my own thread named after me

Copied from other thread (the one with my name):

cpu power vs video card power for gaming

alot of ppl saying cpu power is bottlenecked for alot of 3dgaming coz it relies more on the video card for performance... however

i read that is not true for some games... can anyone tell me which games take advantage more of cpu power than the ladder?

i heard hl2 would use more cpu power because it has a very complex physics engine

Where in the heck is Infamy, I've done a major search for it and I can't find it anywhere? Is it in the US? Which State? Or if not, what country? I am just stymied.

It's the name of a fishery/Bar and Grill up in Adak Alaska. It's where the keep Manuel Noriega and Saddam Hussein. In the center of the Bar is a pit full of laden whale fat. Every Friday and Saturday night All the eskimos converge on one side of THE PIT, and the formal Naval personel converge on the other. They release Manuel and Saddam in the middle. With gobblers strap to their head they proceed to have a no holds bared cock fight in the pit.

If you go, you need a reservation, and they don't take American Express.

not sure if i completely agree with you there hammer, AW used to offer a wireless card with the 51m but it did not seem to work for a lot of 51m users out there due to whatever reason, so AW pulled that option from the configuration while they go in "search" of a better card from a different vendor (i've heard people speculate it's not the card itself but the design of where the antenna is placed internally and the magnesium alloy case blocking signals, who knows.........) However, I'm sure if AW did their due diligence in testing that particular component the problems would have come to light way before the first unit was shipped off to a customer. Instead the forums are littered with complaints about crappy wifi reception or no wifi reception for those units

In addition, this concept about AW using the latest greatest components/technology in their machines, i half agree, i think their desktops are top notch, taking advantage of the latest technology out there (well on paper at least, i.e. the new nvidia "beast" ), however their laptops are a leg behind most of their competitors, and for the life of me i cannot figure out why that is. AW's current top of the line laptops do not have dual channel ram like most if not all of their competitors, best video offered by AW at the moment is the ati 9600 (everyone else has 9700), no dvi out, no wuxga screen, also AW doesn't even offer 2 gb ram in their configuration (even though you can upgrade yourself). One big plus to the 51m is the user upgradeable graphics, however, in a sense their competitor's lappies can have their gpu's upgraded as well, probably not as easily, but still easy enough if you're not some drunk with shaking hands. It just seems to me that AW has made their laptop a "second class citizen" within their organization and that is unfortunate, because i believe that the future trend is for more and more people to go the "mobile" route than the desktop route.

I'm sure AW will eventually "get it" and begin to bring their laptops current. I sure hope so because from what i've heard about their machines, desktops and laptops, they are very very fine machines, but AW has given their competition (sager, dell-yes dell, hypersonic, voodoo) an opening to gain some new customers at AW's expense). I think it's safe to say that when most serious gamers (AW's target market) begin to look for a new machine, a laptop, they look at the AW first, and then get turned off to the fact that AW's laptops are a leg behind their competition's in using the latest technology.

Has anyone called AW to get the scoop on the 9700? Godforbid they might actually give us AW costomers a date...

I called last Tuesday, they would only say they were hoping by the end of April. They would give no cost on what the upgrade would be either.

Can't blame them, if they did announce a firm release date, i'm sure that they would get a flurry of calls from people with machines currently on order, to modify their orders, or to cancel and reorder (however AW's policy is on changing orders)

then they might get left with excess inventory of the 9600 modules

I suppose I should be more careful with my qualifying statements. I don't own a laptop, just desktops from Alienware. I'm aware of the issues you mentioned with the laptops, as well as the performance of the systems despite these issues.

Alienware has chosen a path with their chassis, components, and manufacturing partners that currently appears to put them at a disadvantage in some areas, but like everything in the computer industry that won't last long. I'm sure the 9700 drop in module will be out soon, and I'm also sure that Alienware has their reasons for still using the chipset that only uses single channel memory. I have little doubt that situation will change soon.
