Problems after upgrading fried go 7900gs to 7900gtx/7950gtx in E1705/Inspiron 9400

Hi all.

I haven't seen a thread about this so I guess I'll start one and hopefully someone who has done the upgrade can report.

I'm in the same boat as all those who have had a fried go 7900gs which ended up with "matrix coding" just after the one year warranty expired plus a fried inverter in LCD.

I was just wondering for those who have upgraded to a M1710 type gpu have had any problems afterwards.

e.g. Has the BSODs returned or Memory Parity etc etc. An answer would be great. I'd especially like to hear from those who have had the upgrade for over a year as well (and still have their E1705/I9400, going or not)

Thanks.

My first card (bought on Ebay) was crapped as soon as I installed it, the boot up screen was distorted and pixels messed up. Returned this card for a refund and bought a second card which appeared to be NIB.

Second card nstalled and has been working great since (about 6 months now)

Both card were FX-2500 cards same as the 7900GTX

Tips for a new card install.

As far as installing a new card goes, you should do a complete driver un-install of the old drivers before installing the new card. Old files can and will cause many problems.

and try Dell diagnostics and see if there are any faults on the card.

and last advice, Try a freash install of your OS to make sure it is not a old driver problem etc.

Finally.
There seems to be a ton of dud cards floating around these days, really a good card should just install and go with no problems.

and most memory parity errors i believe are caused by drivers, i had it once in 2 years and that was on first boot when i just installed a 7900gs. I did a clean install and i've not seen it since.

Thanks for the replies as I am just thinking about upgrading now. I'd also like to hear from those who have upgraded to non fx equivalents of the graphics cards as I hear that people with M1710 have had overheating issues.

My 7900gs died this past Christmas and I swapped it for a 7900GTX with no problems. My GPU temps are typically in the 70's celcius when running graphics programs.
