sorry, evanscnce is right. The only way to get 256 is to get them to give you a new computer.

Sorry, but I see NOTHING "faulty" about their advertisements. They are just the same as Acer, Dell, Sony, Gateway etc. The specs on the notebook that I bought (dv6625us) were precisely what they said they were. You have to watch the specs on the individual model that you are buying (the dv6500 line includes a number of different options, but that is true of most maker's notebook lines), and one should always be aware of discrete versus "shared" video memory...but again, that holds for all notebook manufacturers.

If they did false advertise, then you have a very simple recourse to get a refund, to say the least...but unless you are getting different ads from HP than I am...

At any rate, no, the graphics card is not "user-replaceable".

Did you just get this notebook? If so, then why not return it? You may get stuck with a "re-stocking fee", but if you are that unhappy with it, that may be worth doing. Better than being "stuck" with a computer that you are unhappy with.

sorry for such a late response, ive been very busy.

anyways. im not an idiot when it comes to shared versus dedicated. i looked around and read everything they said. not only that. but. when i checked the amount of shared i had over 800 and the dedicated was 128. so i have yet to see 384 pop up anywahere on my system. not only that. but when i downgraded to xp i was told that i have 512. ???? dedicated and shared???? if so then why did vista say i had ove 800 total? there is just some stuff not adding up. and i did call them back. they drug my butt every which way without once saying yes, we fals advertised. ive been looking into this for a while. and this is pissing me off. so i siad screw it. and i started linux :P

Sorry, I did not mean to imply that you were at all careless in this, but it is true that a lot of folks don't really get the difference between shared memory and discrete.

I am curious, when you spoke to them, did they, or did they not agree that you were supposed to have 256 actual video ram?

On my dv6625us, I have integrated Nvidia 7150 graphics, and under Vista, it reads 128mb dedicated, which really is only the frame buffer set aside...that is still really out of my main ram, and 1215mb shared memory. The shared memory got a lot higher when I added 2gb or ram to my system. I do not know if this is a "Vista thing" or not.

I would hope though, that if they claimed you were getting a system with 256mb video ram, that there is some sort of rational explanation...or that HP makes good on it.

yeah. they not only did not know the difference between dedicated and shared but they wouldnt even tell me how much i was supposed to have!!! i literally schooled the dumb @$$ on laptops. after chewing him a new one when he told me that i was wrong and had all the video memory i needed (the 800 shared) so im pretty mad. but screw it like i said. ive got linux going now and its amazingly sweeet
