connecting printer thru modem or router

Thread Starter
A friend of mine has a printer he wants to connect to.
It is now connected to a desktop computer and the desktop is connected to his router. What he wants to do is eliminate the desktop but still be able to access the printer from his laptop which is on the ether net via cat5.
My question is, what would he need to connect the printer to the network without going thru the desktop. The printer does not have an ethernet jack but it does have usb and the router does not. Router is cat5 or wireless only.

He could get a print server, they come in several configurations. I know I've seen wireless ones and believe you can get them with usb as well.

Here's one example from Netgear, and another from Linsys there are lots of others if you look around a bit.

drlouis told everything you need to know.

beware, however, that many so-called host-based printers may not work with many print servers out there. The fact that it has (only?) the USB port is a big clue. I tell that because I have one very old laser printer, and it's one of those, and it requires some voodoo to work with print servers...

that is, I need to use "raw printing" and still, I can only send the job when the printer finishes warming up (just before it stops the warming up process). I needed to guess the right "time window" to hit (looking at the printer andat the computer at the same time). All this kind of defeated the whole print server point, so basically it's sitting in a room, unused.

Look up on Google and you will see what I'm talking about. Search for "host based printer print server". There is an Edimax that claims to be compatible... I may buy it sometime, ot just exchange my 9 yr old printer (awesome, but I feel it will fail any day now) for a good Brother with built-in ethernet.
