OS fresh install help

Thread Starter
I’m not sure where to start so I’ll start from the beginning, after purchasing my Aspire 5610 I decided to do abit of DIY upgrading (more ram, bigger hard drive, larger battery) and although its serving me well so far my computers eventually come to a crawl and despite all my attempts it’s not getting much faster.

Now in this case I would normally do a fresh install of my OS (in my case XP Media Center Edition) however after I moved house recently the recovery disks (that I made with eRecovery after I first booted it up) have seem to have disappeared into a void never to return (anyone that’s moved house will know what I mean). And as I installed a new hard drive eRecovery wasn’t present I can’t make anymore.

Ringing Acer support resulted in a 45 min phone call that from what I can gather... they want me to send my laptop in and I would be paying them something for something they couldn’t tell me till that evaluated my specific case, also they seems less than happy about my DIY alterations almost to the point of refusing to help me.

Well basically my question is this; If I get my hands on a copy of a XP Media Center Edition install disk will I be able to install it and it be deemed 'valid' in the eyes of windows update with the key that’s on the OS sticker on the bottom of my laptop? And will everything work correctly (Wi-fi, sound, trackpad, etc)? Any other help would be greatly appreciated, or anything I’ve overlooked.

Cheers in advanced, Trent

All the drivers and utilities that you need for your laptop will not be on a basic copy of Windows XP Media Center. You will have to go to the Acer website, find your model under "Support>downloads> and get your XP drivers and utilities etc there. As a matter of fact, go to the site first, find all the XP drivers for your model, download and burn them to a CD. That way, you will be ready when installing XP again

Do what saugen48 advises, but in answer to your question, yes, it's legal. That sticker is your XP Media Center OEM license.
Be aware that a vanilla copy of Media Center should be good with it, an OEM Acer version would be the safest no-hassle bet, and almost certainly a Dell, Gateway or HP, etc. OEM version won't work.
