New Laptop vs old desktop

Thread Starter
I’ll be buying a laptop in the next few weeks, and I’d like to know if the new laptop will play games better than my current desktop. I’m not naming a particular laptop, but will specify the parts I expect to have in it.

Current desktop:
Intel Celeron 2.8 Ghz chip
1 GB DDR RAM
nVidia GeForce 6600GT card, 128 MB

Planned laptop:
Intel Core 2 Duo T5450 chip
2 GB RAM (I guess it will be DDR2 or DDR3, I don’t know)
nVidia GeForce 8400M GS card, 128 MB

Currently I play Need For Speed: Carbon on pretty low settings, and Half-Life 2 stutters on anything above low quality. Can I expect to roll up the settings on both? Can I actually shop for games released in the last 12 months?

If I can scrape up a few more dollars, should I consider going to a 8600M GS or GT card instead, or a faster processor?

Thanks!

I'm gonna say yes. An extra GB of RAm, a better CPU with a Core 2 Duo and not an power saving Celeron, and the 8000 series card... should be a no brainer.

Seeing that the memory bus on the 8400 is 64bit, compared to the 128bit on the 6600. Your notebook now might be better suited for games, unless you can upgrade the newer notebook to a 8600.

All this for not!

You're talking about a desktop comparison to a notebook, and I'm thinking you meant two notebooks.

I will get some rest right now, cause I'm really losing it.

Didn't see this...A faster GPU!

8600GT>8600GS>8400GS

I wouldn't expect a drastic difference, honestly. The dual-core processor will be better than the Celeron you have, but not by as much as you might think, since it's only 1.66 Ghz. In addition, the video card on the notebook you're looking at has nearly identical performance compared to your desktop vid card. I'd advise you to look for something with a faster processor and at least an 8600M GT video card.
