Would win98se be faster than Linux...

On a 75 mhz P1? It has a 2 gb hard drive and 32 mb of ram. I am hoping to be able to use the notebook as an answering machine and to receive faxes. I will also connect it to the internet so that I can access it from afar. I don't need a gui or bells and whistles- just the basic part of the OS to get the fax-modem working and to connect a nic to it.

much more like what os would fit on ur comp (than "faster")

I vote linux too, if you're unfamiliar with it you may face some challenges getting everything set up the way you want it. If you decide to go that route, I'd suggest stopping by the linux section here.
