How do I overclock a Dell M6300 64 bit Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme X9000 notebook?

Hi everyone,

I'm curious if anyone knows if these notebooks can be overclocked? If so, how?

I read a review that one laptop vendor allowed over-clocking via BIOS but I'm not sure if Dell does this also and was hopeful that those of you much more learned than I could tell me if it's possible on the new Dell 6300 64 bit with the Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme X9000 chip?

Thanks in advance!!!

do you have the 3600m video card?

if so do some 3dmark with lv2g drivers

Yes, Sir. It's the 3600 M.

I don't know what 3dmark is, but if you will answer my question about over clocking, then I'll take the time to figure it out, run the test, and post the results here for you.

You are lucky, alot of people I know here *zzpulp,.. would luv your setup.

Overclocking should be done from the BIOS if available.

because it's an X variety Proc. you should be able to change the multi from the bios.

as for the 3600m it's a 8800m in disguise.

all you need is some modified drivers like 174.31 from lv2g and you have a very hardcore gaming machine under your belt

install these drivers into vista

and then download a free version of 3dmark 06 *google it.

then run it and post the number you get in the end.

you should get the better part of 10k, which is drool, enough to play the best games.

here is the driver to install. follow the instructions and put the seperate INF in the extracted drivers folder and copy over the original inf.

then d/l 3dmark 06

and you know the rest.

You said it in your response "overclocking in the bios if available" - that's what I don't know. I can't seem to the multiplier setting in there. Ugh....

I'll do the test and let you know what numbers I come up with.

thanks

well i know that the XPS line of notebooks that contain the X variant of processor are overclockable. and any Desktop with X is overclockable.

but people that had the X7600 for lack of a better term. aka t7600g couldn't overclock unless they had the XPS mobo./bios.

I am in the same boat with my notebook.

I do some CAD work and alot of Encoding. so I opted for a DESKTOP QUAD! yep. kickass power. the best you can get in any notebook period.

but I could have got the desktop X6800 but if I DID I wouldn't be able to OC it.

so what's the point in getting a processor that costs shit alot more just beacause it's got a little X in front of it.???? if you can't OC????

F that shit.

If Dell sold the notebook with the X9000 (which I know it does) and you indeed selected it as an option, check the BIOS to make sure its reporting the correct CPU. Also, make sure you have the latest version of the M6300 bios. The option should be in there somewhere I'd imagine but I've never overclocked a CPU on a Dell so I wouldn't know where to start looking. If you do not have the X9000 (or any other overclockable CPU), however, the option will likely be either grayed out or non-existant.

Oh no I fear I hear the death knell of my M90

Thanks everyone - but I'm just not finding it. Bummer. Oh, and ZX81, nothing in those docs, but thanks!
Im sorry to say only the XPS line supports CPU overclocking via BIOS but the M90 was never offered a X series or G series CPU before so you may get th eoption sometime in the future.
He's talking about the M6300 not the M90. The M6300 is offered with both the X7900 and the X9000. It would only stand to reason that you could overclock the things. I think you should ask Dell TehZ. Make sure you get in contact with someone that knows what the X9000 is and knows that it is offered for the M6300.

I'd be suprised if Precision is OC'able though.

Seeing as Dell advertises "Overclockable up to 3.4Ghz" on their XPS 1730 configuration page, but does not mention it at all under the M6300 configuration page, I doubt that it is supported. The M6300 would probably not be able to overclock nearly as far as the M1730 can either, it is about half an inch thinner and would not likely have as robust a cooling solution.

However I am also interested to see how the Quadro 3600M performs. Does anyone know if it is based on the 8800M GTS or GTX? I haven't been able to find any nvidia docs mentioning anything other than memory bandwidth.
Like I said OP, just ask Dell yourself but make sure you get someone knowledgeable on the subject. I think it is misleading if it is not able to OC in the machine.

Oh, and I wouldn't consider the M1730's cooling system as robust.

is the 3600M a 8800GTX Sli ? or a single card?
single 8800gtx with Sheep's (quadro) clothing

I want one, dammit
wonder really how much more the Sli gives you

seems from what benchmarks I have seen, not that much for the extra 400-500 dollars

I called Dell technical support. You CANNOT overclock the Dell Precision M6300 with the new Intel X9000 chip because the motherboard is not designed for this. Seems to me this is a gimmick Dell is running to tease an extra $700 out of its customers because you pay top dollar for a chip with an "X" in front of it and you cannot utilize its full power. Hey Dell ... if your listening ... why don't you upgrade your freaking motherboard!!!

so really why even get the X series CPU in a precision then
