M9700 Vista assistance needed

Thread Starter
Hey guys I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a problem I am having with my m9700 and Vista. I have everything installed but when the graphics card was installed it came up with an error saying no adi codec. Nothing seemed to be going wrong at first but when it was done restarting I tried to run the windows experience index and it failed at the very end. I opened the winsat log to see what the cause was and its reporting that its not detecting a direct x 9 capable graphics card. When I first made this attempt I was running the Alienware SLI capable drivers for vista and I tried to run the test both with sli on and off to no avail. I then went to laptopvideo2go and tried the newest stable Vista drivers and those failed with the same reason in the log as well. If anyone has any idea how to remedy this situation and what the no adi codec error meant I would greatly appreciate the help. I'm also going to post my winsat log below just incase I am reading it wrong and the error is actually something other than the graphics card. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help!

did u go under the device manager and delete the graphics driver and also use drive cleaner to make sure they are goneand restart the computerand it should ask for new drivers to be installed and try that...im assuming you have two graphics cards with ur computer... make sure the drivers are the same on both cards this could cause it to conflict...

Yeah I have two 7900 GS in my laptop. I tried that method and that still didn't work, thanks though. Any other thoughts?

it might be good to reinstall vista... it could be a bad installation...

Again sadly I have tried that as well....4 times. Also of note before I installed Vista the first time I flashed my bios to the newest version, I beleive it was 3.18. I have no tried both graphics drivers from Alienware as well as the 6 most recent drivers from laptopvideo2go and I was met by failure from all of them.

I was going to suggest driver cleaner pro, or an OS install, but it sounds like you've already done that...

Have you contacted Alienware, or Microsoft? I think Microsoft has places to submit issues with Vista.

I assume you do the windows updates? I was also going to suggest you load DX9 to make sure you've got everything... I see in your list out that you're getting the message that there's no D3D9 support... Is it possible with Vista, that it's trying to run DX10, which the 7900gs vid cards don't support?

Try running dxdiag from your run prompt. Hit start > run> type "dxdiag", then hit OK. This will bring up dxdiag, a program that tests your direct x functionality.

If you click on the "display" tab, there is a button to test d3d. It will test d3d7, d3d8, and d3d9. If there's a problem, it should give you some information that may help.

On the "more help" tab, there's a troubleshooter as well.

your not the only one with vista problems. I keep getting the blue screen of death after like 25 mins of running vista. Windows update doesnt update all the way and i have to restart like 5 times just to get it to work, and most of the drivers i try to install freze half way through.

Ok so I tried the testing my directx to make sure all was well. Everything came back normal but regardless I decided to go download directx 9 and install it. Still failed, so then I tried uninstalling the graphics drivers and then installing directx 9 and then reinstalling the graphics drivers...still failed. So in my last ditch effort I formated the HDDs and started from scratch with a fresh install of Vista, this time I used my friends Vista Ultimate disc just incase something was wrong with mine. I then installed DX9 and the graphics drivers and tried performance index again....still failed with the same output log. So yeah I think I just wasn't meant to run Vista.

you could try to make sure the chipset drivers are removed and reinstalled to see if that helps... also my final thought would be to delete your video drivers and then shut it down and reseat ur vid card and then reinstall ur video drivers...
