I've always wondered, and now even more tempted to find out.

What would I have to buy to set up a 5.1 system on my laptop?

its an HP8510p, with ati HD2600 card, i have HD audio drivers, and normal sound drivers

thanks!

links to a 5.1 card that works would be great

oh, windows xp pro sp2 OS

ideally, you'd need something like the Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS PCMCIA sound card

The problem is, Creative discontinued it so it's pretty hard to find at the moment.

Can't you just connect the 5.1 speakers to the ports of your laptop? I mean, I'm not talking about quality, I'm talking about possibility.

from the specs I looked up, he doesn't have an SPDIF port on the notebook, so it can only output up to 2 channels of audio.

. probably go thru a receiver (laptop hdmi port->cable->receiver ....)
. not sure about HDMI has anything to do with the original audio source in order to carry 5.1 audio signal

cheers ...

well if you have the logitech z5500 they do an amazing job of getting "5.1" out of 2 channel audio. I dont know how they do it but it works awesome.

Also I dont think you can really do anything with the HDMI port since HDMI audio is digital I believe and most inputs on computer speakers are analog. So you would have to hook the HDMI up to a TV or reciever then send an ouput to the speakers. I have one of my laptops setup like that.

but your best bet is to get a sound card. I dont know what kind of card slot you have so here is a usb sound card.

Yeah, if hdmi is too troublesome for you (keeping receiver near, that kind of stuff), the audio card, as said djembe, seems to be the best option.

I've got the Z-5500 speakers and I don't use them that much for gaming. I use them more for movies and when listening to music. They're a great small to medium room speaker setup, and they'll pump out enough volume to fill a large room as well. Anyway, it's your money and your decision.
