How to bend a heat sink?

Thread Starter
I have recieved a replacement video card for my E1705. I made the order through Dell and had it shipped to family who in turn shipped it to me overseas. One would think that Dell would send the right card based upon my service tag, but...

the card (actually the heat sink) does not quite fit in. The old heat sink was parallel with the card and fit in snugly between the fan and vent... but the new one is slightly out of kilter and hits the fan. Is it possible / what is the best way to bend the heat sink slightly (1/2 inch)?

Unfortunately, despite my anger with Dell and their 'guarantee' that the card was exactly the same as was in my computer (after trying to pry from the service rep what exact model of the card it was they were selling me), the fact that I paid a premium by ordering the part from them and not off of ebay to ensure that I had the correct/working card since it is a long and expensive process to get the card to me overseas I am probably now stuck with it. any suggestions?

I don't really think there is a best way. Just bend it slowly to make sure the plastic under it doesn't break (if possible). Really, I don't like the thought of bending the heatpipe. Maybe you have an old GPU from your computer and can use the heatpipe from it. Then you would only have to realign the thermal pads to correspond with the locations of the memory chips.

This is Richard from the Dell Online Community Outreach. I am responding to this thread because from time to time I have customers directly send their computer to me to personally correct a problem. When I have ordered video card replacements for the Inspiron 1705E, there were a couple of times that the pipe was slightly bent.<o></o>

In each case I was able to gently bend the pipe so that it would fit properly. There were no issues after the install. You can PM me if you have any other questions. Best of luck to you.<o></o>

Oh, sorry, I was under the impression that Dell gave you the incorrect GPU (i.e. one for the 9300/XPS2). If the heatpipe is only slightly misaligned then a cautious bend will do the job.
