So here is the BIG question... Quadro 3600M in a M1710

Hello fellow peeps! Well it is about time for this question to be asked... I am a fully certified DCSE for dell and I was just certifying today on the 2008 systems and noticed that the vcard instructions for the M1710 are identical to the Precision 6300.

Hmmmm....

Oh and dont give that "generation" excuse either friends.... It sure looks like it will fit... Same form factor.... hmmmmm....

Just remember... the X800 really had 16 pipes, you can damm near oc the 7900GS' core double, amongst other surprises... It would explain why dell may have held out on this card until the dual 8800's came out for the M1730... Who would buy a 1730 w/8700's when you can get a new card for your 1710... Timing me thinks... It wouldn't hurt dell too much to release that card now since the duals are out and are obviously faster...

Anyone have both a 1710 and a 6300 that would be willing to test this?

THIS COULD BE BIIIIIIIIIIIG......

And tech rule #1 - Never believe a manufacturer when they tell you anything until you prove it yourself...

Oh and PCI-E is PCI-E so if the connector is compatible, it would be system bios from there.

I am almost willing to bet it works... I have 2 1710's at the shop that would really like this...

*NOte to board, when you ship back your Dell to the depot, the techs play operation

Here is a screen of both pages in their respective training manuals.

Oh and if you never noticed... the 6300 lacks a subwoofer...

It will not work...plain and simple. All Dell machines require the BIOS to support the card. The latest M1710 BIOS was released before the M6300 was even released I think. Plus, even the M6300 itself required a BIOS update for the Quadro FX3600M if I recall correctly. If you know someone that can disassemble a system BIOS then sure...elsewhise, lets avoid another 400 post thread leading to nothing like this.

Unless it is tried, we shall not know... I am having thoughts of the 2600XT AGP upgrade I just did for a client. Without a bios upgrade...

... Oh, the client insisted... lol...

I totally understand your point too zz, just try and put an atheros minipci-e wi-fi card in a HP lappy and see what happens...

Plus there is a difference now... No one has proof either way so in realism, we are all talking out our a$$es until someone actually TRIES it... There was no card to try. Now there is. Now we can know. And knowing is half the battle (GI Jooooooooe!)

Anyway, Since the hardware is now available and soooooo tempting, I was just calling to someone that is fortunate to have both systems, or has a friend, etc. and give it a shot. What can you lose... It's not gonna fry the card or anything. I practically butt raped the x800 opening pipes back in the day so I know anything is possible... given the proper talent and experimentation.

It Wont Work!

Why don't you call spare parts get the part and try it yourself?

I want to see a comparison of performance to the 7950GTX. I doubt it would even be worth $550 to me aftermarket.

well I have a single 8800m same as a 3600m give or take..

assuming it's an 8800m thru and thru.

I get more than 100% improvement in games. all games that I have tested.

35fps crysis 1680x1050 on high crysis benchamrk tool

60fps jericho on high 1900x1200, got 25 fps before.

I have also considered this approach but the fact remains you will need a 6300 mobo - and a new open GPL video card & CPU - yes on ebay for $$$ (also looked at this) but I would rather buy from Dell as it this price you would be able to buy direct - and yes I do have a 6300 service tag. I think all other parts would fit except the touch pad which on the 6300 has 3 click points so I don't know if my 9400 connecter would wotk, which makes it a cheaper option than paying 4K for a 6300.

However whats holding me back is the $$$ so I'm simply keeping an eye on auctions for dead 6300's meanwhile my 7950GTX card is running fine and I don't have any games which I can't currently play.

The M90 touchpad works for the M1710. By that rationale, I would think that the M6300 would work on the 9400/M1710.

In that case in two weeks I think I will buy a mobo for the 6300 and slowly put something together - have been contemplating this for a while the fact remains that the 1730 is a rather large unwieldy beast and I have been impressed with the scores from the alienware 15x I not convinced that the sli option is really that much better than a single 8800gtx and lets face it the 1730 has gotten just to dam fat. So if I can get a 9400 hybrid 6300 up and running for less than say 2K then it's probably worth it - just have to slowly do the build so SHMBO does not know..........

here's something interesting. This is the picture of actual item from Ebay. Notice the heatsink is different, there's more metal on the left end, and an extra piece on the right. PCB is most likely the same as geforce 7 series, so changing the heatsink might make it fit

I think it may be worth a try... I will talk to my shop partner and see if he wants to "play"... I can probably get the card much cheaper too as I have ties to dell and such...

I remember how I was treated when I made my M1730 predictions... I now laugh at you all as I was right in the end... and the time before that... lol..
I doubt I said anything that was refuted. I didn't really comment on the M1730 at all beyond its looks. I am going to tell you now that I am 100% sure the M1710 does not support the 3600M as of now (and most likely never). The post I made earlier contains all the logic of this argument but if you want to rely on pure hope then that's fine.

Slightly off-topic. Anyone here having a M6300 with the Quadro 3600M? Is so, would someone be kind enough to run 3DMark06 & post their scores? This Quadro 3600M has got me interested in getting a Precision M6300 as I think I like this form/design better than the M1730 as well as having the option of having a WUXGA matte screen.

I agree, but hope is what got the MR9800 unlocked, the 7900's overclocked, etc...

yes it may lead to nothing, but if you never try its guaranteed never to work.

So all thanks to any who even tries it never mind gets it to work
