No a bad deal.
Did they discontinue the 8700's?

Dell is still offering 8700 SLI on it website, but I prefer 8800 SLI. It will be useless if I choose 8700 SLI on new lappy, perhaps I'll just keep my old M1710.

I mean just a single 8700?

No more single 8700, but you can still find it under Dell Outlet. What is the point of getting a weak GPU for gaming lappy?? Just get a Gateway P series lappy with 8800 GTS 512MB for $1500

Well, dell has said they will ship a new laptop rather than swap the mb. the laptop they are offering up is the 1720. any thoughts? It does have the full keyboard which I find to be pretty awesome.

I need to buy a shiny new Penyn and 8800GTX!
Still will be a deal for the $ 399.00 you paid lol
post #168 of 349
uh oh.. I just read the tech manual for the 1720. where it's a nice laptop, Dell is using a form factor for the video cards that is only shared on the vostro. and both lines top at the 8600. I am trying to convince my rep that this video card is less than what I had so this is not an acceptable replacement. thoughts?

You should just ask for them to give you a 7900GS or 79x0GTX imo. I know they still have some.

And I don't know why this thread got hijacked...

For all the Driver problems I'm having, the only reason I'd buy this if it was $400 Let alone $4000!

Im kinda dissapointed the FX3600M is only an 8800GTS and not the 8800GTX we all hoped for. Makes the Alienware 15xx or the Clevo the best options now as I find the XPS1730 just to darn big.

Oh well hopefully the next gen XPS will be better.....................

or the gateway, best price/performance by far

I think the M1710 will be my last DTR. Desktop time baby! Maybe a small laptop on the side.

I'm guessing this thread is wrapping up now. Anyway, my post earlier meant to just ask them for the GPU and not a replacement. I doubt they would offer the replacement with the GPU (even though the machine actually may support 79xx cards).

Gateway system is cheap, and a good mid range game lappy.

Where do you get it from that the FX3600M is based of the 8800 GTS? It's actually based of the 8800M GTX...

Did you bother to read the past few pages?
The fx3600m only has 64 shader units (vs 96 for gtx) and has the same clock speeds as the gts... therefore it is based on the gts...

YAY! I fixed GOW!!! It's a setting in an INF file that's causing the stuttering. When you first play it's alittle skippy but after awhile it's silky smooth
