So here is the BIG question... Quadro 3600M in a M1710 - Page 2

you need someone to hack the bios and since the bioses are utilizing different chipsets and standards... it's near to totally impossible.
why bios flashing is so necessary? in past times you didn't need to flash a vios, except xps series
post #23 of 349
In the past most of Dell's notebooks used the same motherboard with the BIOS labeling the systems differently thus u could use a videocard from an Inspiron notebook in a Precision or Latittude notebook.

I have a M1710 that I would be willing to flash with the M6300 Bios if anyone can crack the bios so it can blind flash my system. I also have a M6300 in my office that I can test the video card in if the M1710 will boot with the new bios.

I thought the FX3600M 512MB were same as 7950GTX. Wasn't it??
No. The FX3600M supports Dx10.
By looking at the MB for M1719 and 6300M, it seems the FX3600M might be work under M1710. If this thing works, I guess M1710 + FX3600M might be a better choice than M1730 with 8700M SLI, or perhaps just purchase the M6300 instead...
seems like the fx1600m works in 9400s. So, there are good chanches that the fx3600 will work also.. There's a boy from an italian forum that has ordered the 1600, there are plenty of auctions on ebay claiming the 1600 works in 9400 m90 and m1710.. so we will see
post #29 of 349
the FX1600 is just a Geforce 8700GT so there are trade offs going from 7900GS to FX1600 other than 512MB (not fully dedicated) Theres little reasoning to "upgrading" to a FX1600 but this could mean FX3600 compatibility.

Just do it! Thing wont change if no action
post #32 of 349
I would except for the fact the M6300 Bios wont flash on a M1710 without it being cracked first for a blind flash.

all this speculation and NO PROOF.

IRobertus, if you swap cards and just try it with no bios messing, you will be a king around here....

I think it will work (as per my first post.)
This is beyond speculation for sure. If the machine the card was intended for needed a bios update to use it then why would a machine that wasnt intended to use it (and hasnt had a bios update since the m6300 even came out) support the card. This is definitely not gonna be a drop in. That's not to say that I'm not willing to try to help with some alternative methods.

Anyway, first, I want to get some benchmarks for kicks. 3dmark05 would suffice for me. And if you could post a rom of the video card bios that would be perfect.
Look

It is either you do it or not, you don't have to mess arouind with BIO. Just plug in the video and see if it bootsup. If the video card fits, it will not be a problem. A notebook is just like a PC, the BIO will auto detect the video card.

If Dell design the card different, it will not even fits.
No it probably wont work, it was the same thing with the 6800Ultra and 7800GTX in the Inspiron 9300's you had to flash the bios with the cracked XPS Gen 2 bios to get it to work. I was one of the first to do it and actually still have a guide floating around here.
I know thatt is while back..., but dude.. we all have the M1710 XPS. What I want to know if you can at lease try to plug in the card and see if it fits. The heatsink can be mod so it will not be an issue.

I am in the middle process of looking for a new lappy to replace my M1710. M6300 is actually one I am looking for. If I can save the money just buying the video card, and that will be the best idea. I have look at my friends' M1730 and I did not like it at all. It is way too big!! If this thing works and the 3Dmax06 will be scored around 9k which is pretty enough to play all the games now. Maybe not Crysis at high setting.

Let us know. Thank you.

All these new guys on the forum just dont understand that we've been through this stuff multiple times so far. If you want to please them then you can go ahead and prove it doesnt work irobertus. I, however, have been around these dell laptops since the XPS2 was released. I already know the answer. Its the same its always been.

Anyway, post the rom robertus...we can try the vcard mod once but it probably wont work. I can guarantee nothing bad will happen to the card but I can see why you might not want to risk tampering with the FX3600M
post #39 of 349
Very slim chance it'll work. Given that the form factor is the same and the bios will recognize the card. If the bios doesn't recognize it you might as well forget about it.

Although I'm curious what the m6300 gets benchmark wise

Damn, a M1710 with a 8800GTX shit that's the doom of the 1730 This reminds me of the Gen2 with the 7800GTX.
