Wow.. is that even possible? Can I put a 15" mobo on a 17" case?

I would actualy do that if it was cheaper.. I think I'm gonna settle with the 7900GTX + overclock. The extra memory will definitely make a difference.

Actually the 6300 (the 4300 is the 15inch form factor) is a 17 inch unit built on the same form factor as the 1710/9400/M90. In theory I believe it to be possible just expensive if you only get a 8800gts - if it was an 8800gtx then I would think it would a a great option

wouldn't it be easier to sell your old notebook on ebay and buy a new one?

Easier? Yes, for sure.
Cheaper? Naaah..

i sell my e1705 on ebay for around 800 euro after 2 years of use.
a new m6300 with fx3600 and t9300 costs around 1500 euro.
so i will spend around 700 euro for the new laptop with not only a new
graphics card, but also a newer cpu, faster hdd and 3 years of guarantee.

It works...I am writing to you right now from one....sort of....I have a Dell Precision M90 which is basically just like a 1710. There are however a few minor issues...by a few I mean just one big one...The screen brightness is set to its lowest value and there is, as of now, no way of making it brighter. I assume this is due to a dell bios issue. If anyone would like to help me out and give me some ideas that would be fantastic. I actually stumbled across this page while looking for a solution to my problem. This is the first thread I have seen that is even close to talking about what I did!

Ok. This is the same result that two of us already posted. This will require Dell releaseing an updated bios for the M90/1705/1710/9400. Which they are very unlikely to do.

So, was there anyone that found out how to fix this problem?
No, Its a Dell BIOS issue and they are not going to relase one to make your laptop work with the wrong GPU

I hate to bring this up again. But couldnt it 'therotically' be re-worked to fix the brightness issues? Provided we have a BIOS cracker/hacker?

And @ whoever asked- Dave is right, theres a better chance of hell freezing over than Dell releasing a BIOS for GPU that doesnt belong

Sorry, if I am bringing up old problems and suggestions already tried...also sorry if my ignorance is annoying...haha

What exactly controls the screen brightness? I would assume that it is a matter of regulating voltage to the back light LEDs, yes? So, my point is, if we can access the graphics card bios with something like NiBiTor, then can we tweak the voltage settings in such a way as to up the brightness? I really have no idea how to do this as I am more of a hardware tinkerer....are there such things as system bios editors that are user friendly GUI set ups like NiBiTor?
ok.. The computer bios controls brightness. It is a screen setting. The bios on the older laptops does not recognize the video card or the screen plugged into it. As a result it doesn't pass on the screen controls thru the video card. The laptop does see teh screen type thru a 1600M and as a result can control it. This is not a video card issue but a systemboard bios issue. the 1600M is an 8000 series gpu where the 3600 is a 9000 series gpu. This has all been addressed and discussed in length previously in this post.

It's not ignorance that can be annoying. it's the fact that it appears you read the title of the post and then just jumped to the end to post information that was already present. as a forum practice, this can get a lot of people upset at you for not reading throuhgh.

Again, this question has been asked, answered and filed. Please at least read the post you are adding to before just adding to it.

The problem all goes back to the BIOS, in short the new GPUs are not reconized by the BIOS, and as a result it will not know how to control it.

The only fix would be

1. Dell Updates the BIOS for this GPU - Never going to happen
2. Someone hacks the BIOS - Never has been sucessfully done.

I also discovered that new display panels would not work on my E1705 machine, the BIOS did not reconize it and the display was dark.

Don't get us wrong, were always happy to help around here, it some questions seem to get repeated 1000 times lol

thats interesting I couldnt get an fx1600 to work in my M90, it just cycled through primary colours like a zx spectrum loading a game.

I didn't try too hard though and skipped the fx3600, as I was impatient to put the fx3600 in the m6300
post #216 of 349
Have any of you thought it might work on an Inspiron 1720 ?
1720 is probably a no go. The M6300 shares the same basic platform as the 9300/9400/1705/1710/m90 . The 1720 is not the same layout.

If the interface with the mobo on the 1720 was the same as the m6300, you could possibly swap out the heat sinks. The 8700 from the 1730 would probably be a more suitable card, but you would have an even tougher time getting it shoehorned in there.

Hey all -

Just to make sure the i's were dotted and the t's were crossed...

You DID reflash the bios after rebooting the machine - right? Dell seems to have some kind of video card / lcd identification scheme built into the bios flash.

I have heard of 7900gs cards not working until after the reflash of the bios. I assume the cards were not the same rev.
I know I tried re-flashing with no success.

Ok - dumb question - will a 7900/7950/1500m/2500m/3500m work in the M6300?
