So here is the BIG question... Quadro 3600M in a M1710 - Page 13

Yeah but the screen replacement has already been tried. I don't want to dissuade you though. I mean second opinions help justify our perception.
along with swapping inverters, flahing GPU BIOS, etc etc

but have fun anyways
yep, and it was $631 from dell ca for the GPU and they are asking >$1000 from dell US

so not really cost effective anyway

I got my recent M6300 with stock FX3600 for $1450 from notebookreview for sale, so there are deals out there, plus on dell outlet stateside occasionally

Sorry Guys!
I can`t read all the posts!
I have an 9400! My 7800Go is down!
So i bought an Quadro FX 1600M.
What I have to do now! Please tell me, where I get an update for my Bios!
Thanks for your help!

get the lastest Dell BIOS from the www.dell.com site

look for the support link, then Drivers link.

With the latest BIOS your GPu should be fine

There are 3600m equipped m6300's in the outlet for under $2000 (1869).And in the past I've seen them close to $1500.Just keep a close eye on the outlet.I'm sticking with my m170 and the 7800gtx.Still plays most games smooth, even Crysis just have to turn settings down a bit.

Most of them are WXGA screened, too - so transplanting your 1920x1200 into the chassis would be prudent.

I have read this thread through and I keep wondering if anyone has thought of simply solving the dimming issue the hardware way - wiring the inverter for full voltage? Sure, you would loose the dimming options, but nobody really uses that on a DTR, anyway...
Wow. I'm quite impressed with this thread. I was thinking about doing that mod, but since I'm short on cash for a newer gen card I thought I'd just OC the hell out of my 7950 gtx. The inverter issue is a biggie and yeah a hardware workaround might work (while most definately voiding any worthwhile warranty), but the bios is the primary problem. Is there a basic bios that dell made? Like, I'm sure that they probably got a bios from someone else, and probably re-wrote it a bit (a company like phoenix for example). I doubt it could be found anywhere, it makes sense that the bios can 'detect' anything, just that it would only allow certain cards and chipsets to be utilized.
You could try uping the inverter voltage, putting in a brighter inverter (so when dimmed down fully it'd be useable, or trying some old M1710 bioses, that's what I'm about to do for my temperature control issues :P.

Of course, the BIOS would be the elegant way, but it aint there, and probably wont ever be. Getting a new inverter if needed to replace the modded one is not a big deal-there are also universals for the mod..

Dell finally released a Bios Update for the M90. Will try the 3600M card swap again next week.
You get a chance to try it with new bios yet?
Also on a side note, would a wsxga screen work in a M90?
I was think of getting one kind of middle of the road between the 1920x1200 and the 1440x900. Thanks, Adam

I got a hold of a M300 motherboard and wondering if I can take out the M1710 motherboard and put the M6300 in and use my 7950gtx and all the other parts from the M1710. Excluding the sub woofer.

CPU won't work.
Not sure if the GPU's have exactly the same footprint. The heatpipes of the M6300 GPU's are definitely thicker but this shouldn't matter. The 7950 GTX should be supported by the BIOS as the Dell BIOS typically allows backwards compatibility.
HD = definitely
LCD = probably but may require M6300 inverter

Anyway, not that anyone cares anymore but I may get a shot at doing this mod the right way later. I may just have a M1710 on my hands that I am willing to brick soon enough.

Forgot about having to buy a new CPU. I just hope that if the GPU works, then the LCD may work.

Yes you can, I have successfully converted my M90 in M6300.
Unfortunately the system board isn't the only component that you must exchange.

You need:
  • M6300 System Board
  • M6300 HeatSink (1710/m90 heatsink not compatible)
  • M6300 Bottom case/plastic (1710/m90 not compatible)
  • A Socket P cpu (T7x00, T9x00, X9000, ...ect)
  • M6300 Palmrest. Here you can recycle the 1710's one but it is only partially compatible and you will have difficulty in closing the notebook if you not use the M6300 Palmrest
All other components are compatible.
My FX2500M (7900M GTX) is working on M6300 but there is a software problem (you must use only forceware driver before release 100.x).

Please read here:

I haven't tried yet the new M6300 A12 bios, so I can't tell you if the problem is still present even with the latest bios
post #258 of 349
Dude that's not converting a m1710 or M90, thats replacing 95% of the computer with different parts

Today I have tried my FX 3600M (from my M6300) on my M90

With Bios A07 there are problems with the brightness as already known.

With Bios A08 (the last M90 Bios, released on Oct 2008 so recently) same results:
  • Brightness at low level
  • No Brightness control
  • Vga Card not recognized by Bios and classified as "unknown".
  • Lcd Panel not recognized by Bios and classified as "unknown". I have tried M90 LCD and M6300 LCD with same results
Bios A08 doesn't fix the FX 3600M problems.

Apart from the problems of brightness the card is fully functional in M90
post #260 of 349
Nice to know, but does it have the same comparable preformance? The only way it seems is to have a dell bios that at least somewhat supports the card, and if it doesn't support the new features and what not, it pretty much negates having a next gen card in an m1710.Although I did hear on here that a 1600M works properly, but is still not worth it. Only a fully functional fx3600m would be worth my time and frankly my money.
