I have partially tried 3D Mark 2006 and the performance were only little below M6300.

But the difference was so minimal as to think that the limit is the cpu and not the video card.

Core2Duo T9300 2.50GHz 6MB cache on M6300
CoreDuo T2500 2.00GHz 2MB cache on M90

Hmmmmm, if only the brightness could be controlled somehow. Then I'd dive into getting one of those badass apples / vcards :P.

I assume you're using the correct drivers too and they're actually working?

Driver used during test Dell Nvidia v175.75 for FX 3600M and off course they are working

The real problem is that the bios does not recognize the LCD panel, so unable to set the default brightness (which then starts from the minimum possible) and does not give you access to commands to adjust it after.

What video card is classified as "unknown" is not a big problem.
The same happens with the FX 1600M, but with it the LCD panel is recognized (I think) and controls for adjustment of brightness are functioning

Of course it is the fault of the video card if the LCD panel is not recognized.
Likely commands to query the video card and ask what is the LCD panel that is connected are different from those used on the vga cards above (including FX 1600M), and M90/1710/9400 Bios not implements the new commands for the FX 3600M

If there is a software solution (tool from windows) or hardware solution to adjust the brightness bypassing the bios then you could use FX 3600M on M90/XPS 1710M/9400

Then remains the problem of availability of FX 3600M as bulk part.
To date or not there is no FX 3600M for sale or is found only at very high prices.
Buying a used M6300 with FX 3600M costs only slightly more than buying a bulk FX 3600M (I repeat however that it is now very difficult to find as bulk part)

All software solutions would essentially query and ask the BIOS so software is a no-go imo. Unless a user disassembles and adds support (hopefully trivial) in the BIOS then this will never work.

This is going to be one hell of a bump, but I was thinking,
1) What's the form factor of dells 3700Ms?
2)

For the 3600M brightness issue, how bad is it really? Obviously people are typing with it working. And doesn't the inverter hook up to the system board? In that case, wouldn't it just be simple to dremel holes in the hinge cover and bezel and put a switch in there that goes to an external voltage supply like...ohhhh, the nice and easy 5V supplied by the Usb port right on the back? (or just solder it directly inside.)

I'm probably going to be shot by the above for bringing up something that is reminiscent of the xps gen2 times. Especially a year later. :P

Most of the brighness issues were fixed with a Bios update that allowed further support of newer video cards back in the 1705/1710 days. Unfortunately, the M90 never got a bios update back when I was working with the card issues. I will have to go back and reread my posts to see where I left off.

The 3600m fit in the M90 case - just barely. You would end up having to mod it a little bit.

As far as form factors on the 3700m and 3800m, I will let you know in a week when my M6500 gets here. I think the bigger issue is the amount of power that the 3700m and 3800m consume - 75 and 100 watts resepectively.

I still have my M6300, but I sent my M90 over to another department since I was not using it any more.

True, I'd rather a 3600M though. I have the latest bios for the m1710, and am not willing to force flash to the newest E1705 one. But my latest one was in 2007, A07. No updates like the e1705 got yet.
Yeah power requirements I can handle no problem, I'd get a 200W adapter if I had too.

So, in a nutshell? are you saying that because of the bios update that was recent for e1705s, that this is in fact,,,,A SUCESS?!???!?!? or not?
I'm hinting at zzpulp right now when he sees this if ever.

And is mine being at the latest 2007 mean for upgrading I'm Shatouttaluck?

Can It Work???

so if I read the posts correctly. With the latest bios update A09 on a Inspiron E1705 I can use the next gen GPU cards such as quadro 3600M???

I know of a bios update for the 9400/E1705 and considering how Dell does BIOS updates, there is a chance the 3600M would now work in the 9400. However, I don't think I have heard anyone do this and I only would have the M1710 to test with which I don't believe got a BIOS update anytime recently.
how i wish this would become a reality at least there might be something to do with my aging 1710 with a slowly dying 7950 aside from buying another 500$ 7950 wich dell should sell 30$since its one of the worst piec......
anyone got a 3600M for sale? Just upgraded to the latest bios A10 for my E1705. I love this machine and I am hoping to get is maxed out as much as possible.
I have a 7900 GS for sale but not a 3600M.
hello.
I have FX3600M. New. Only tested working.
(I can sell it with Ebay if somebody need this card) (later I may be buy 150W adapter and do not sell card)
And....? are you trying to sell it? you should go to the for sale section in the thread. If you have an m1710 or an e1705 you should install it and see if it works!!

Btw, it needs to be a 3600m from a m6300 precision I think, all the others are mxm or a different dell form and won't work for our purposes here.
I have only 90w adapter. Card works with E1705. Screen bright on lower...
M6300 very much cost.
Do you speak english?
yeah that's the problem everyone's having, without a good adapter you won't get much out of it. I'd be willing to buy it at some point if you'd like, send me a message on here.
Have you benchmarked with it yet?
sorry, I am ukrainian.
I want over clock T2500 and then do it full test.
For that you'll need a better power adapter, (150W) and to overclock the T2500 I think you can only do that through the front side bus since the multipliers on that chip are locked. Unless you have a magical way around that.
