So here is the BIG question... Quadro 3600M in a M1710 - Page 17

Hello Again,

This is the most simple way.

1.

Buy a cheap inverter for a single CCFL (7$ i think)

With the specification:

Vin max atleast 19-20v.

Vout above 600v

IMG_0355.JPG

2. Chop the original harness.

You need the pins 1, 2 & 3 because they contain the supply voltage. (19v something)

In the pictures it is the wires in the top right of the harness, i just chopped the rest for measuring)

IMG_0352.JPG

3. Find some resistors that will lower the USB voltage to achieve maximum brightness on the adjustment pin on the inverter.

In my case that was at 3,3V

I didnt find any specifications what the maximum allowed voltage was so i kept it as low as possible (I guess it is 5v but i didnt want to fry it,)

I used simple voltage division:

R1= 4,6K

R2=10,6K

wire.jpg

For the ground i used the small screw below the LCD.

4. It's Soldering time!

IMG_0357.JPG

Ok, This isnt a beautiful solution or anything but it works for me, i skipped using the pots in the end because i didnt want to drill in my case and to be honest never really used the brightness adjustment (perhaps because i had to remove the keyboard to do it, lol).

so from this thread, will a quadro fx 1600m work in a dell precision m90?

from reading thru this thread is 'seems' clear that a fx3600m will work in a e1705...
when i purchsed the 7950gtx for my laptop i should have got the 3600m azz.gif

but will a fx3800m work in a e1705?
has anyone tried it?

Hhhmmm I may have an idea for a cheat way around the dimming issue...

So if I am correct the port in which the LCD screen connects to the GPU is an XFX port.

I may be wrong correct me if I am. If I am correct you can buy an XFX to VGA convert cable and connect the LCD screen over to the input screen on the back.

This method would be equal to hooking up an external monitor; However in this case you would be able to use the LCD screen attached to your notebook rather than another screen entirely.

Here is the link to the web page.

http://penta.com.au/accessories-generic-c-202_2914_3065/generic-xfx-vga-ribbon-cable-12pin-63-15p5812w-ntk-p-43122

I have no clue if this would work as a quick fix So if you are able to try it let us know if it worked.

Please review and respond with good feedback.

Good luck,

So I sat down and began thinking regarding this issue and I became upset. Why in hell would Dell create another model computer with interchangeable parts that fit but are not backwards compatible because of the bios Dell refuses to update. The GPUs fit and obviously function without physical issues or improper circulation.

How in the hell could they have a partnership with Intel when Intel clearly promotes they want to unify laptops and encourage interchangeable parts. What a slap in the face Dell has done to its customers and Intel.

So I decided to write them a lengthy email and CC as many contacts from AMD, INTEL, and Nvidia as I possible could.

I have attached the letter here. Read it.

Emails were sent to

Hi,

My name is Damian. I have purchased 3 of my laptops from Dell over the years. Being pleased with my past purchases, I have continued to promote Dell Products and Have successfully convinced many to purchase Dell Computers. With that being said, I still enjoy my Dell Inspiron E1705 Notebook.

However, recently I have become very disappointed with the lack of bios support from Dell as well as thousands of others.

I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 17r and thought it would be nice to upgrade my old Dell Inspiron E1705 to keep up with the performance of the new laptop and utilize them side by side at my workstation.

With much research I have learned that many of the Dell laptop models were built with many interchangeable parts. Especially since many of these laptops support the same or parent Intel motherboards shared compatibility with Nvidia (GO ,GT, GTX, Quadro FX)and AtI (Radeon) video card models with the exact same fitting and port specifications as its sister/ parent model notebook.

These laptop models were sold during the time that "Intel" promoted Interchangeable Unified laptop components.
Link: More info Regarding what Intel Promoted

So my issue is that with many of these processors and graphics cards are interchangeable and are physically supported as Intel intended them to be.

However, Dell unfortunately has failed in providing bios support for these components.

So basically after installing an Nvidia Quadro FX 3600m which was sold with the Precision 6300m/ and is/are interchangeable among Inspiron e1705/ XPS M1710/ Inspiron 9400/ Inspiron m90 and many other models that shared physical characteristics and similarities and compatible express chipsets and memory controllers along with many other interchangeable components; unfortunately after doing so the screen suffers from a brightness dimming issue because the bios does not recognize it and therefore it is conflicting with the LCD screen inverter (end result an extremely low unchangeable screen brightness). However if you output the video to an external monitor the GPU operates perfectly with the configuration.

And No it is being powered by a more than efficient power supply of 150 watt, again the support is being withheld by the BIOS Dell has failed to provide.

So as I clearly ascertain the issue, It clearly shows the lack of respect Dell has for its partnership with Intel to support Intel's Intentions and its customers. What is the point of having a personal computer if you are being limited bios support which limits your ability to personally upgrade your computer.

After reading through hundreds of forums of people seeking support from Dell and given the run around, I decided to send an email of my own.

I look forward to receiving a run around email as to why the bios revision cannot be made. I urge you to provide a detailed email regarding this issue so that my self and hundreds of other heart broken Dell consumer may kindly use it to promote forums and youtube videos as to why consumers should not purchase Dell Products and How they lack appreciation with their partnerships with Well known Companies (Intel, AMD, Nvidia) and its Customers!

Or you can simply update the bios and avoid the headache on both ends. You would seriously make thousands of people very pleased with Dell. In any business, Its the long term customers that matter the most; at least that is what we would expect from Dell.

Please forward this email to your Directors and CEOs

As this letter has and will be continue to be forwarded to many others.

Thank You for Reading,

Actually I just have a simple question for you all, has anyone here tried to change the device ID on the 3600m to the device ID on the 1600M,

I have a M90(same as M1710) and have the 1600M, 3500M and 7900GTX and I thought what if I changed the device ID on the 1600M to the same ID as the 7900GTX's I have, and what do you know, the backlight still worked but when I changed it to the ID for the 3600M it stopped working, it was the same with my 7900GTX and my Quadro 3500M, 1600M ID worked, 3600M ID = no backlight.

What I am thinking is that the 1600M is recognized by the bios and is implemented but it was basically a trial run because If you change the ID to anything other than the supported cards(including the 1600M) the backlight goes kaput, well at least it does for me.

I'm not talking about flashing a 1600M bios on a 3600M either, I'm saying change the Device ID on the 3600M bios to the 1600M's ID

Hi Eliss. An intrigueing suggestion. CAN IT BE THAT SIMPLE?

As per my post#2 on this thread (http://www.notebookforums.com/t/241590/extreme-e1705-9400-m1710-modding-maximum-upgrades-possible-nvidia-quadro-fx-3800m-1gb-dedicated-memory), I have all the hardware to try this, but I don't have a clue about how to access the Card BIOS and edit it.

So if you can give me some guidance I'll certainly consider trying it.

you need to download nibtor, gpu-z, and nvflash(preferably windows version)

first backup your original bios with gpu-z(icon next to bios version) twice, a file that says stock.rom and mod.rom

load nibtor next to modify the bios(mod.rom), its pretty easy with the latest version the 1600m is already pre loaded so all you need to do is go to the device field and and click Quadro FX 1600M from the drop down menu, then save it and do this on the mod.rom because if you notice the, 3600M is not there.

now flash with nvflash the mod.rom, you will probably have to do a force flash because the id does not match though

before flashing you should remove the nvidia drivers to avoid wacky things from happening upon reboot

if it does not work reflash the stock.rom and go back to normal.

So, remember the email that was submitted with all of the big shots attached to the email.

Today I received a call from Dell Customer Support. They asked me a few questions and they seemed deeply concerned. They also said that they will be transferring my case over to technical support.

Keep your fingers crossed, lets hope they take this seriously and update the bios to support the 3600m.

1. Edit FX3600M ROM ID to FX1600M

Okay, I've used NiBiTor to edit a copy of the FX3600M ROM.

Under the Adv Info tab I edited the Device ID from 061C (FX3600M) to 040D (FX1600M) and saved. On re-opening the modded ROM it now describes itself as a Quadro FX1600M.

Is this all that is required?

2. Bad Flash Recovery on Mobile Card

Assuming that a bad flash means you dont have any video, how do you recover to the original stock ROM on a Mobile? Can you?

no when I say does not work I mean that the backlight stlll won't work and you should not have a bad flash(no video) since your flashing the same bios but with a different id, but if you still have the drivers for the 3600m installed and ready then the drivers for the 1600m will also be on the notebook(they come together with a bunch of other cards in the drivers) so you should remove the nvidia drivers before flashing or you will probably bsod upon reboot which would be very bad if you get my drift.

MAKE SURE you have a backup of the stock bios rom.

Can you post a picture of the dim screen in action? I would like to share it so I can continue to argue my point with Dell.

Hi

Seriously, that is irrelevant. This is a support issue that does not involve replacing hardware. This issue does not involve an issue
with the operating system.

THE BIOS NEEDS TO BE UPDATED, VERSION A10 DOES NOT CORRECT THE ISSUE BECAUSE THE QUADRO FX 3600M IS NOT RECOGNIZED BY THE BIOS.

Please forward my case to upper management in technical support.

I am speaking for myself and thousands of others that are having this issue. We communicate on forums and folks are very upset in this
case.

Please take this seriously.

***************************Hey guys with the FX 3600m installed****************************************

I found this tool. Its is meant for an EEEpc. This tool allows you to double your brightness levels beyond what was allowed by stock.

I know that it was meant for a completely different PC but that does not mean this it will not work at all. Give it a try.

Here is the link please try and return with results.

http://cpp.in/dev/eeectl/

I hope this works.

Thanks

In one of my earlier post she replied with a support number and a managers contact info. Please everyone let them hear our voices.

Who cares if these are outdated machines "". Mine runs windows 8 just as fast as my new machine if not better.

The point is they were not designed too far apart. The video cards are interchangeable and guess what, the fit each case so technically they require bios support.

They might give you a dead end answer about your warrenty is out of date. Just let those guys know that is irrelevant because you are not sending in you PC for repair or replacement. You are calling for something that they should have done a long time ago.

Reference posts #328-332 above.

Flashing 3600M ROM with FX3600 ID modified to FX1600 ID.

In summary, I've tried it and it doesn't appear to work.

Using nvflash_windows, and Cmd Prompt I eventually got the commands right and got the modded ROM to flash (with drivers on card - couldn't find a way to remove drivers without uninstalling the card (assuming that the card needs to be installed to be able to flash it)).

Command string that worked - "nvflash -4 -5 -6 (filename).ROM" (had to say "yes" to the overrides). Got the confirming message that the flash had been successful.

Hint: - I had to set "User Account Control" in Windows 7 64 to "Never notify" to stop it interrupting the command string (reset back to the Default afterwards).

Result on re-boot - a black blank screen.

Recovered doing a "blind flash" of the original ROM from bootable USB (used "Rufus" to format the USB - VERY easy with this (and free)).

Blind command string that worked - "nvflash -4 -5 -6 -A (filename).ROM"

Hint: don't forget your working in DOS, and file names can't have more than 8 characters - dah.

nvflash windows - you can drag-and-drop the ROM file into nvflash, and it will run provided your not using overrides (-4, -5, -6). Might be able to drag-and-drop a batch file that has all the commands in it (including -A  the auto "yes" to all overrides).

Eliss - if you have any comments/suggestions on what I could have done differently, fire ahead.

So after flashing did you gen no video before bios or after bios,

if you got it after bios did you notice the screen was any brighter on the dell logo.
