7200 rpm hard drives really generate so much heat?

I remember when I upgraded my desktop 5200 to a 7200 the increase in speed was quite noticeable. I have a 4200 rpm hard drive in my p4 notebook and would like to upgrade to a 7200, as well as max the memory to 1 gb. Part of the reason for the hd upgrade is more space - I only have 40 gb now. Part of the reason is to decrease the boot up time and make the notebook more effective at video capture.

. r we to understand ur question that, would an upgrade to a 7200rpm drive heat up ur comp?
. personally, it has to do with more noise than heat
. newer disk nowadays do offfer less noise (& potentionally less heat if one cares about)

cheers ...

I don't think so. My 7200RPM drive is always around 32C. It is quiet as well. I know that you can adjust the noise with a bootable CD, at least for Hitachi's.

My older 4200RPM was just a tad quieter and it was around the same heat. You can set NHC to spin down your drive if noise bothers you that much.

Also, mine might run cool because the chassis is so thick.

Thanks! I noticed on pricewatch that all of the 7200 rpm notebook drives are sata. Is there an adapter I can get to use one in my notebook? I am pretty sure that my notebook is some flavor of ide.

. ide to sata controller adapter is more suitable for desktop than for laptop - namely power supply and space -
. in ur case, using sata drive as an external would be more feasible
. there r enough good ide 7200rpm drives out there and at a good price

cheers ...

I don't hear no decimal difference between the 5400rpm drive that was in here, compared to the two 7200rpm drives I'm using now.

Both my hard drives 100 7200rpm (HD0), and the one in my module bay 80 7200rpm drive both sit at 32C according to I8fanGUI.
