I have a compaq evo n1020v P4notebook. I believe I can change the cmos to force it to boot from a usb device. If this is true can I remove the internal hard drive and run the computer all the time from the external drive? I have noticed that my hard drive gets rather warm, almost as warm as the cpu area of the notebook...also I want to get a 7,200 rpm hard drive and more and more of the cheaper ones are SATA (my notebook is ide).

(1). one can probably - sure - to boot from usb. Tricky issues is that Windows OS is still not looking at an usb device as one of devices to be booting from , apart from network and hard drive controller
(2). please refrain from multiple postings, using a "varianting" trick in theming ur queries (that could be easily interpreted as "spamming") - thank you.

Thanks! Sorry about the multiple postings. In other forums I have participated in they prefer the issues to be separated, even if they are related, rather than put together. In my mind, the question of internal vs. external and whether to use 7200 rpm, while related, were not the same. Sorry for the inconvenience. I really appreciate all the help that I have received from this forum and thanks for your insight! I am working with disabled children in China now and I often don't have the luxury of "trial and terror" because it is hard to find parts if I make a mistake, find knowledge locally (usually because I am working with budget (read ancient) equipment, so all of your insights make my life and work much easier.
