Expresscard, PCI-Express or USB 2.0?

I've learned that an Expresscard port can be internally connected to a PCI-Express bus OR to a MUCH slower USB 2 bus. I was thinking about buying an eSATA Expresscard to attach an external hard drive at full speed, but this will be a total waste if my laptop's Expresscard works with USB.

How can I find it out?

My machine's an Asus A8Js with an Intel i945GM/PM (Calistoga) northbridge and an Intel 82801GBM ICH7-M southbridge. I've been searching info for hours but I've got nothing

ur express card slot should supoort BOTH usb and pcmcia - good read
http://www.expresscard.org/web/site/qa.jsp

the internal mechanism that decides what xfer protocol to be used, should be transparent to the users and depends on the attached devices. Simply saying, the end device must be clearly stated at what speed it is being performed under.

to the point, if u hook up an eSata external drive to the pcmia express slot, it will use the new & improved pcmcia speed - if u hook up an usb external drive to the pcmcia express slot, it will (should) switch itself to the usb 2.0 speed

cheers ...
