Yeah CMOS clear button is a great idea, the whole playing with pin thing was much more of a pain in the ass

<--- Just flashed my DFI LANParty X38-T2R mobo with the 3/20/08 BIOS for the X48-T2R.

<---has an X48 mobo.

not an x38.5

X48 = higher-binned X38

From what I've read, DFI's X38 boards had hand-picked X38 chips, which are the same thing that the X48 chips are. Thus why I can use the X48 board's BIOS on my board. So, I just have a ninja-X48.

I know, I know.
Threads over how to make a Maximus/Rampage and such. I figured why have a fake X48, when I can have the real thing.

I just bought a rampage, didn't know I could get an X38 and try the bios thingy...

Buck47, you said you were going to test a Q6600 in this mobo, are you planning on working with an E8400 also? I'm a newb to OC'ing, but I've got the rampage and an E8400 coming. If you're going to OC an E8400 on this board, I'd like to see how you go about it.

I had no idea it would work either until I started poking around at XtremeSystems. Those guys over there are INCREDIBLY hardcore (modding and overclocking) and I started reading into it, looking at Clunk's review of the DFI X48-T2R, seeing that the boards themselves (X38-T2R and X48-T2R) are identical, and then seeing that some people got bold and flashed their X38 boards with the X48 BIOS. Works like a charm, though I don't notice any difference at all.

My stance on the X38 vs X48 thing is this: If you're building a new computer at this point, and have plenty of money to spare, go for the X48. If you'd rather save some money (anywhere between $20-$100) then go for X38. There's really no reason (in my opinion) to go for X48 unless you really want bragging rights for having that higher number. It won't be until Intel releases ICH10 that it'll change, but that's not due for another couple of months.

Interesting article...

I didn't even think about pulling the copper and installing AS5 on the rampage mobo, but they suggest it.

Hammer have you seen my worklog?

This is what my Rampage will look like...very soon.

cept for the fans I have are a little better 80mm ones.

Holy crap, that's hardcore...

I'd better check out your log.

The bottom line on the X38 vs. X48....X38 is EOL -> officially being replaced by X48.

@ HH - I do not have an E8400 chip. I have an E6750, Q6600, and Q9450.

The E8400 is an OVERCLOCKING MONSTER. Lots of folks have a stable overclock of 4.4 (air) on that chip.

Are you using an aftermarket CPU heatsink/fan?
Why are you messin with the E6750? Lets see how that Q9450 clocks on that board. I'm leaning towards that mobo/chip combo for the other rig.

I am almost done with the E6750. The Q6600 is next, then on to the Q9450.

That's if I don't sell the Q6600 first.

From what I can find so far, it seems you either pay $100-$200 for a P35 range board, or around $200-$300 for an X38/X48 ~$300 for the x48

Looking objectively, I can't find much differences between a good P5 and an X - by that I mean the overclock level you can get with an Q6600 or E8400. It just seems "easier" to tweak, and then you get down to the physical design maybe more slots etc for Xfire (but I'd go for ati x 2 initially)

That being said only ~$100-$150 difference is ridiculously cheap percentage wise based on the cost of a total new build, seems stupid not to spend on the main component

Am I missing something? I think the P35s are good, but can't see why not get an x48

cheers

*Edited for P35, I have asus P5 motherboards on the brain

**Can you move this to the proper section, yes 2 screwups on a quick post. Me dumb, no coffee & nightshift

I have a Zalman 9500 I'll be using. It's the earlier, smaller version of the 9700 you have. If it's not adequate, I'll get something newer.

I'll have a very similar setup to yours. Same mobo, memory, similar heatsink/fan, similar psu and the E8400. Hope I get a good one. When I didn't see an ide on the board specs, I ordered a sata dvd burner, just ordered the same one you spec'ed...
