Help me decide on a laptop

post #1 of 8
Thread Starter
I have been looking to get a laptop, the laptop would primarily be running Linux (fedora), and windows on a dual-boot setup, i have narrowed down my selection to the below laptops but cant decide which one to choose, please guide me and also provide your reasoning for your choice

* Acer Aspire 4520 -Good reviews but have doubts on acer as a brand

* Compaq V3611AU

* Lenovo 3000 G410 204934Q -Seems to be the best in terms of quality

The lenovo has a good track record with linux support. I don't know about the other two in that regard.

Acer tends to be at or near the bottom in terms of reliability and support. Compaq is associated with HP, and HP seems to be on the rise regarding reliability & support, especially in the business realm, but Compaq is their "budget" brand, so I'm somewhat mixed about that. Lenovo took over IBM's notebook line, which was the best in reliability and support for a while, however the one you posted is their own model and not one using IBM Thinkpad technology. Even so, on the whole, I'd go with the Lenovo.

acer cs, sucks...compaq is pretty good in quality at their price point though they won't use the best hardware and well ibm, while plain looking, simply works and works..

i say ibm!

I do believe that these are European Models, as I was only able to find them on the International Website. Anyway, I like the looks of the 701. Of course, it is a 17" laptop and if you are going for portability then this probably wouldn't be a good choice for you. You have to ask yourself what are your priorities? I notice that you chose 3 different models of Gaming laptops, so I assume that you are wanting a good gaming system. Do you want to carry it from place to place? If so, the 600 is a good bet for portability as it is a 15.4" laptop and is a bit lighter. Also keep in mind that it has a 8600GT graphics card, and while it is a good graphics card, there are newer graphics cards coming out like the 9600 in the 700 series MSI notebook. I know I haven't really helped you choose which one, but there are a bunch of factors to consider when purchasing a laptop. I have a friend who had MSI laptops in the past and has had good success with them. Anyway, good luck in whichever one you choose.
