Cooling fan on 3 year old PCG-K45

Hello Everyone.

I am new to this forum, and I have a question. I have a 3 year old (bought 02/2005) Vaio PCG-K45. The cooling fan runs all the time, even when the computer has been idle for a long time. The fan has different speeds, and when the computer isn't busy the fan runs at a fairly slow speed. It runs much faster if the CPU is under load.

Is this typical? We have other laptop computers, and on them the fan usually is off, and only comes on occasionally. We live in New Hampshire, and don't keep the house over 70 in the cold months, so it's not the environment it's in. Also, I just had it cleaned out of dust by a professional service tech, so it's not clogged. I'm wondering if this is something to worry about, or is it normal for this model. I can't for the life of me remember if it's always done this, or if it's new. We didn't use it for a while, and I'm getting ready to give it to a friend, but if there's something wrong with it I'd rather not make it my friend's problem.

Thanks for any insight/advice/experience you can give me.

Thanks Steve. I did some research using other resources, and have a much better understanding of how it all works now.

I don't really need any more replies to this thread.
