17" Laptop Owners please leave a reply

Thread Starter
Hello, I'd like feedback from owners of 17" sized PC Laptops (not Apple Machines).

Specifically, id like owners to watch a short 9 second youtube vid then replicate what is seen in the vid on their 17" machines and report :

A) If your machine either flops closed as seen in the vid

B) or the display holds firm and does not move on its hinge (such as seen in the vid or at any angle)

Please also note the machine you conducted the test on.

Any other comments that may be useful concerning your 17" laptop's hinge characteristics.

Mucho appreciando

I actually had to shake mine to do that but just tilting it like that it didn't budge.

my notebook is only a 15.4" one (Asus Z71v), but like Everex'd said, it doesn't move at all when tilting it. I had to shake it pretty hard to get it to move about 25 degrees. The hinges are very sturdy and my notebook is three years old.

just checked with little sis mac book (15.4) - no dice, solid as rock. My 17" sager just as solid (& it is 3 years old). Take it back to the shop, probably just some tightening up

cheers ...

my old 17 inch HP DV8010us would move slightly, NOTHING at all like yours

seems like a loose spring somewhere.....

Clevo M570RU, sturdy as a rock. Even shaking it didnt budge.

That would annoy the hell out of me as I suppose it does you. If your unit if fairly new, get the hinges replaced. Most hinges are not able to be tightened. I have seen some in my time of laptop repair, but in general they arent. Take your laptop to an AppleCare center and get it fixed. If your unit is new and this is something that the other same models do, I would say Apple has gone with some loose hinges.

17 inch Alienware m5750 does NOT do that.

Owned it since summer of 06

That is caused by one of 2 things... On dell for example, there are several screws that relate to the hinge assy... 2 of which are usually under the rubber dots on the bezel. The 2 on the bottom come loose regularly on many laptops I work on and I just tighten the hinge mount screws and voila!

Now the second involves the hinge barrel directly. Some models have an adjust/tighten screw, but others are sealed barrels and they are sometimes not built exactly right with the seals, etc.... I'll let you figure the rest out...

17" Toshiba P105-S9312 and it does not budge an inch at any angle. If that was my Mac I would be furious.

My brother-in-laws MBP 17" doesn't do that either.
