HI i am looking for a laptop for $2000, it should have the below

* 2.0+ Ghz proc
* 2 GB RAM
* 250+ GB HDD
* Graphics card for occasional gaming

Would also like a recommendation on the brand of laptop to go for, which ones to avoid and why.

Please specify the games that you want to play. Your graphics requirements are determined by the requirements of the games you play, not by how often you play them.

And my preferred brands are as follows:
  • Asus - above average build quality, dedicated video cards on most models, good price/performance ratio, cool extras standard, and good warranty (negatives: poor battery life, frequent model changes can limit availability of replacement parts after warranty expires)
  • Lenovo - built to last, good battery life (negatives: somewhat underpowered, ugly)
  • HP - seem to be improving in build quality, increasing adoption in the business world (negatives: no special positives)
  • Apple - thin, look good, fairly powerful, OSX, unique ports (negatives: expensive, varying build quality, poor upgradability)

IBM transferred their laptop division to Lenovo, which is on my list. Very good build quality.

Dell is not one of my preferred brands because their build quality and service are not consistent. Many people have had great experiences with Dell products and many others have had horrible ones. I personally would not want to take the chance.

good advice above...
I chose a Clevo based on performance to price ratio....

But I would minus the Apple if you are going to be gaming, unless of course you intend on ditching the Apple's OS in favor of Bootcamp Windows... Mac Gaming is the suck... But even if you ditch the AppleOS, there really arent very good GPU (video chipset) in any of the Apple laptops...

with dell the key is to purchase through small business and get a huge discount if possible. also make sure you get the best warranty available (at home service and completecare). the reason for this is that in the event of you having an issue they will get it repaired and do it well.

with my dell i have had issues, none of which i would really call build quality, mostly just parts that needed replacing within the warranty period. overall it worked out well for me and i would recommend them. for what you are looking for and the budget you have i dont really think there is a much better option out there than the systems dell currently has on the market.
