Help with a Gaming Laptop Build?

Thread Starter
I'm trying to find a "gaming-oriented" laptop and have been looking at various builders. I have a budget (AKA Credit Limit =P ) of about $2000. I'm also trying to stave off obsolesence with this new rig (I'd like to get through at least three to four years before replacing it).

Right now, I'm looking at this build from HP:

*HP Pavillion DV9700t Series Customizable
*Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit
*Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo Processor T8300 (2.40 GHz, 3 MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
*17.0" diagonal WXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1440 x 900)
*4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
*512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS
*Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 4965AGN Network Connection (No Bluetooth)
*240GB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (120GB x 2)
*LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support

This build will cost just over $1600 w/o taxes. Also, the games I'll probably be running are CS, EVE Online (obviously), The Sims 2, WoW (if I ever go back; probably won't), WC3, HL2, possibly CoD4, and obviously others. I don't do any A/V editing; only Photoshop junk from time to time.

What do you guys think? Suggestions? Anywhere else I should look? Thanks!
PS: I'm looking at dropping from Ultimate to Home Premium, and therefore from 4Gb to 3Gb RAM. Also, might drop down to one 120GB HD to lower the weight.

Well, I hate to break it to you, but "staving off obsolescence" isn't really possible. Next year, Intel's new Nehalem architecture will be out which will make everything before it instantly obsolete. However, many computers can last a long while as long as you take care of them.

Since you're looking for a gaming machine, I would suggest buying one with a better graphics card, especially if you expect to play any upcoming games. I'd say you should look at notebooks with a minimum of an Nvidia 8600M GT or ATI HD 2600 graphics card. The rest of your configuration looks fine.

is the 64bit Vista OS even compatible with most games?
