Dell Inspiron 6000 video help

Thread Starter
First off, Thanks for letting me post here and letting me be a member here. Secondly if this in the wrong thread, i'm sorry for that.

Moving on, I bought a Dell Inspiron 6000 from a guy. This one has the Mobile Intel Pentium M 760, 2000 MHz, 1015 MB (DDR2-533 DDR2 SDRAM), and the Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family (96 MB) onboard video.

So i noticed a lot of stuf was on the laptop and got tired of removing stuff and decided just to format. Got all the updates, etc stuff and went to intel for the video drivers for the onboard video. Well none will install period, the ones off dell is the only ones that will work. Fine i can live with it, it works good enough for now. But i cannot figure out why it only has 8mg shared ram. How the world do i change it from 8mg ram to something else. As in the bios i don't see any setting to change for this. And i'm not sure if dell has a hidden bios key or not.

But i'm pretty sure it was using mor ethen 8meg before i formatted the laptop. so what gives? Does anyone have a clue to this mystery.

Good Day

Hi KILLER_K welcome to the forum!

Are you sure you’re not mistaking the Intel chipset of the mother board, with the ATI 64mb or 128mb ATI 300 video that is installed in the i6000?

I just looked up your model, and there is an onboard Intel video model. I'll look for the guide, and get back with you in a minute.

The amount of memory use is dynamically adjusted by the operating system depending on current usage. Simply put, when you need it, it will increase. Don't worry about it, you cannot change it.

No, sorry it has the intel graphics built in. This is the results from Everest report.

As i know he didn't buy the ati add on card. Not sure what is going on at the moment. But i know 8 meg is wrong. Maybe it has something to do with a driver or the new bios not sure. But like i stated before it was fine with this bios and the other drivers, as it was using about 96 meg or ram before i formatted it.

Probably just some bad luck again on my part.

Why would it say 96meg being used out of my 1 gig when windows was idle before i formatted then. Just seems odd, i keep checking then. As i know that onboard video isn't going to do much, i'll see if i can do something to test the video and watch it then. Not even sure why a onboard video should even get 96meg of ram but just wondering.

Here is a picture of the intel onboard video card memory:

Yes, I just found out you have 64mb shared memory.

Go into display properties, and click on the settings tab, then advanced tab. Once there, click on adapter tab. If you have the right driver, it should list available memory settings. If not? Then it will just adjust like sakor said.

Okay how and where did you see that at then. Maybe i am over looking something then. Or where do i set it at would be better.

64 shared I found in your user manual for that model. I use to have onboard video, and that's how I use to change the settings if I didn't feel like changing it in the BIOS. Did you do what I said yet? You can set it as high as you like, since you have 1GB of memory. I only set it at 8MB if I'm not gaming, since it does use system memory as shared memory.

If you're looking in the adapter tab and don't see it, then you should have a drop down menu option where it states what you're using in ram (memory). Beside the 8mb, there should be a half arrow pointing down....never could remember what those are called.

Well brother, you might be out of luck with me. I see that it's up to 64mb shared with ATI, but it doesn't say what the intel has.

Reading the pdf for it as i seen nothing really in the origianl manual. I do notice the screen looks wrong though, even as it is in 1280 x 800 it looks terrible. So i will report back when i get done.

Did you look in the display settings as suggested? Anyway, looking at this you should have 256mb shared video with the intel based video chipset.

Inspiron 6000
A base Inspiron 6000 was shipped with a 1.5 GHz (upgradeable up to 2.13 GHz) Intel Pentium M processor or a 1.3 GHz (upgradeable up to 1.5 GHz) Intel Celeron M processor, 256 MB RAM (upgradeable to 2 GB), 400/533 MHz FSB, Intel 915GM/PM chipset, an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (with up to 256 MB shared memory), 40 GB Ultra ATA hard drive (upgradeable) and a 15.4-inch WXGA wide-screen monitor. Like the Inspiron 9300, it featured DDR2 random access memory. In comparison with other Inspiron models, the 6000 was considered the "versatile and affordable" member of the Dell notebook line.
The higher-priced Inspiron 6000D provided a dedicated graphics chip, the ATI Mobility Radeon X300 64 MB PCI Express x16 (upgradeable to 128 MB), which ran at a core speed of 300 MHz and DDR memory speed of 216 MHz.
The Inspiron 6000 from Dell was among the first notebooks to arrive on the market with Intel's new Sonoma technology. According to Dell, the Inspiron 6000 would deliver faster data processing, and users - particularly gamers and graphics pros -- should see less audio and video chop, quicker task execution, less power consumption and enhanced battery life as a result. The Inspiron 6000 notebook added features and help files making it easier and faster to operate.
In addition the Inspiron 6000 offered a number of improvements over the Inspiron 5160, which it replaced in Dell's home/small business line-up. Upgraded features included a 15.4 in wide-screen display (available in WXGA with a 1280x800 resolution, WSXGA+ with a 1680x1050 resolution and WUXGA with a 1920x1200 resolution), a slightly slimmer profile (though it's about 2.5cm wider) and a Manufacturers bundle- (starter) memory cards that accommodated only a handful of photos.

And here it's only 128mb

Technical Highlights: Inspiron 6000

Try to install the driver from this page.

The most I found about changing the video memory, is you can't. It's just as sakor said, controlled by the operating system.

"If its Intel onboard, its automatic. It takes and gives memory as neccesary. Means in standard Windows you don't lose a chunk of memory for no reason"

That's a quote from boogle, member of another forum.

I still haven't had time to test it under a strain. But i tried the driver you said i get the same error from it also. This is the error i get when trying to install it.

Have you installed the chipset driver yet, found here?

http://support.dell.com/support/down...&fileid=149851

Maybe you need this chipset driver, in order for the operation system to reconize the video chip.

The chipset driver is the first driver I install after a fresh install of the operating system. If you've already done this, then I'm just as clueless as you are as to why you can't install a Intel driver specifically for the Inter Chip.

But looking over what you posted about video card memory, it states that your card is 8mb with up to 96 being shared. So if nothing else works, it is what it is.

Intel emailed me today and replied to my issue. They didn't help me fix the install driver error from their drivers. But told me the same thing "sakor1" did about the memory was controlled by the application. So i guess as long as the older dell driver works i will just stick with it. Thanks again for all the help and replies.
