My VGN-S360 motherboard failed, so I sent it off to Sony Tech for an estimate. They wanted $699, so I found another third-party place that offered to fix it for $450. I took them up on it, which is another story all together...
When the laptop was returned, I did a clean XP install and attempted to install the drivers from the Sony site. I kept getting the "this update does not apply to your model" error. So, I let the Sony Support site auto-detect the model and it came up as "VGN-S170P." I checked around and it appears that the specs for the -S360 and the -S170P are essentially the same, so I'm guessing it's some kind of BIOS-type issue.
So, my first question is can I flash it with the -S360 BIOS or will I screw it all up?
Secondly, I seem to have a CD/DVD drive issue. The drive can recognize and read most all DVDs, but it can't seem to read any CDs. The CDs will usually be recognized OK, but I can't seem to execute any files that are on them.
So, my second question is do you think this is a driver issue or a hardware issue? Sony doesn't provide any driver/firmware for this drive and I haven't found anything by searching the web.
Thanks!
