hp pavilion dv6000 headphone jacks quit

I don't know much about computers so I have no idea what could of caused my headphone jacks to stop working suddenly. The built in speakers work great but when I plug in my headphones the sound still comes from them. Is this a hardware issue? Im not sure what direction to go with this. Any help is hugely appreciated as I need my headphones to work. Thanks.

Unfortunately, I do believe that you will find that a driver re-install does not help with this, although normally, I would agree on that as a "logical" step.

Problem is that if your sound chip is configured correctly so that you are getting sound through the speakers, the problem with the headphone jack almost has to be "physical" at that point. When you plug headphones in normally, there is no software-driven instructions given, it is purely a mechanical/electrical connection from the headset jack, connecting the headphones and disconnecting the path to the speakers. I would suspect that there is a break somewhere in the path between the headphone jack and the internal speakers on the motherboard...probably at the point where the headphone jack is connected to the motherboard.

It does sound like a hardware issue. If under warranty, send it back to be fixed. If you think your warranty has expired look at hp.com and search for warranty enhancement. The DV6000 has a sort of recall where they have extended the warranty. If you cannot find it let me know.

Go to control panel then click the "hardware and sound", next is click the sound then select a playback device, then click the properties and enable the playback device that you have selected. Make sure you have disabled the enabled device in your computer and only the headphone is enabled, then click ok. This will work your headphone back. If you cant hear any sound still, try to restart. pretty sure, it will work then once you have on your pc. Thanks! Good Luck!...-dinahreal
