9890, how long has yours lasted?

So, my 9860 crashed, I paid to get it fixed, got a 9890 motherboard, same story as a lot of people. I'm thinking of adding more memory to the 9890, but I've had it since November of 06, the 9860 lasted 18 months, if the 9890 has the same longevity it's about due to crash. Why should I spend $80 to upgrade something that's about due to crash? How long has everyone's 9890's been lasting? Any of them crash yet?

Thanks,
frank

Well, not a 9890, but I am still using my 3 year old 9860 and am coming back to the forums to decide what to get next (my buddies have these cheap Dells and Toshibas that are running circles around my old beastie).

My 9860 has been a great machine. It has 2 80G drives in RAID-0 (so no issues with that in 3 years) and a 3.6G processor, 2GB RAM.

Now I'm thinking I'd like something a tad lighter, so I'm considering the 5793, but am reading about the louder fans ... but I wonder if they're even as loud as a 9860!

(Oh, looks like I at least need to take the cool smilie out of my sig ... )

Dude, 3 years! You should write Guinness, that's gotta be a record! With the lack of response, I guess I'll go ahead and upgrade and see what happens. I am gonna do a reload of software first, the response time in XP has been a little sluggish, but I'm still running off the factory install. I don't see all these little Dells and Toshibas running circles around me though. I can run Battlefield 2142 really well with an excellent picture on my unit. Then again, I haven't been around others with these cheap Dells and Toshibas. Good luck!

My 5793 will arrive tomorrow. Unfortunately I'm going out of town for the weekend.

But yes the 9860 has been a really good computer ... just showing its age. I hope the 5793 is a little more travel friendly. I don't travel that much but when I do the 9860 has been a pain to lug around.

My team has been doing some software development and running some of our more advanced tools concurrently has been easy for the Dell and Toshiba computers used by my colleagues but I've been quite hampered and unable to do some of the same things. But I believe that will change with this new system.

Well, I got on here because I couldn't connect to my wireless network after upgrading to SP3 and then I saw this thread.

My 9860 is still going and I got it in May of '05. The only things that happened to it were the RAM randomly fried one day (got it replaced under my extended warranty) and the hinges are starting to get a little wobbly. Other than that, it is still running strong.

I agree, after having such a big, heavy laptop, it really makes you want to get a lighter one next time...

I bought a 9880 around 3 years ago. I did the right thing a purchased a two year extended warranty from my vendor PCTorque. Unbeknownst to me, PCTorque sold my warranty to a third party.

My mobo went bad within the first year. Sager did a good job with the replacement process. The mobo went bad again after about 9 months. The third party warranty vendor went out of business just prior to this and my machine was stuck at Sager service for three months, afterwhich I had to pay for most of the repair.

The third mobo lasted right about six months. Now I have nothing for my $3200 purchase. PCTorque blames the third party, Sager blames PCTorque and the mobo maker. And I have a marine accessory, (boat anchor). This makes everyone involved look very shady, especially Sager because it's their name ultimately on the product.

Buy the Dell.

i have had mine (9860) for 3 years. i clean it every month. i take it apart and blow the dust out. i even put new thermal paste. at one point i even wet sanded my heat sink.
i love this thing but like evrything else it is showing its age.

I'm still using my 9880 that I bought brand new 3 years ago. I never blow it out, only occasionally dust it off, and it still works flawlessly.

Ymmv, as with everything.
