DFI Lan Party X48

Found a great website review of this (and related X38) board

http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/revie...ng-review.html

Lots of photos walk through

Thinking of getting one, they are under $300

That's funny... It's absolutely IDENTICAL to my DFI LANParty X38-T2R. Who woulda thunk it?

It was between that board and the Asus Rampage for me. All the comments about needing to know what you're doing if you're going to overclock put me off a bit... I'm really good at screwing things up.

I went with the Rampage...

tony what you use for chipset cooler? I read the therma 120 needs mods to fit; I plan on some form of quad

going to go for x48 just because its not much more cost than x38 now (I realise its basically the same board); the new p45 etc boards this summer will not do anything extra I need

Just waiting on ATI card. Planning:

X48 DFI ~$300
Quad something ~$300 q6700 or higher
DDR2 (cheap me)
good cpu cooler
750w PC silencer ~$150
ATI 4870x2 ~$500 Plan on adding extra xfire GPU later in life of system
antec 182 ~$160

and just make up the rest with what I already have

rampage looks great but that living review is eye candy, the board looks like kawasaki green. Nice to read lots of positive reviews

At this point, I have nothing besides the included stock NB heatsink on the NB. No fan, no nothing. Same with the SB, just the stock heatsink.

I've watched temps closely, and they still run cool, so I'm not worrying about it.

Right now, I'm running at 400x9 = 3600 with all voltages, save for the CPU, stock. The CPU VID is right now at 1.26v, and everything is perfectly Prime stable for a solid 48-hour run.

thanks, I ment for the cpu cooling but think you got that.
had had a few beers

Oh, for the CPU, I've got a Thermalright XP-90 with a Panaflo 92mm fan. Idles at 24-26c and hits between 44-46c at full load, at 3.60GHz. For thermal grease, I'm using Arctic Silver Ceramique.

I'd also recommend going after the Q9450 if you're going quad. I've read good things about them, and the price is right for you (around $300).

That's going to be my next upgrade (the Q9450, maybe the Q9550), hopefully in a couple of months, if not sooner, and sell this stellar E6750 (the thing overclocks like a BEAST) to make up some of the difference.

Anandtech reviews DFI X48

Pretty cool review

The question is: can DFI topple ASUS's X38/X48 DDR2-based boards such as the Maximus Formula and superlative Rampage Formula?

You'll have to read it to find out.......

I'm leaning towards this mobo myself, or possibly it's x38 little brother. Depends on the price gap, really, since there doesn't seem to be a huge difference between the boards.

I am concerned by the mention of the board being a bit tight with 8gb ram and 2 gpus. I'm currently planning on putting one of the newer 4xxx series boards from ATI in there and then putting another one in for Crossfire next semester, so I'll want both x16 slots usable with 8gb of RAM. Is that possible? What has been your experience? Without the board in front of me, it's kind of hard to tell if they're just nit-picking about things being a bit tighter than they'd like, or if this is something I should actually be concerned about.
