Is this true ? I have read a few things about this and apprently the new M1730 only really see's 3.4Gb or RAM not the full 4GB if you have it installed ?
Can anyone clarify this ?

Am looking at getting one, just wanted to know, I know this is the case for my Inspiron 9400 as I have 4GB of ram and it only see's 3.4Gb, but thought they would have fixed this for the new machine ?
Cheers
Dan.

The XPS M1730 is a Santa Rosa. Windows can't see a whole 4gb, but the Motherboard itself can.

you need a 64 bit os to use the 4 gb. (with the new boards such as the M1730 etc)

Or Vista SP1 to at least tell u how much total ram you have in the system.

This is from the Dell website:
The total amount of available memory will be less than 4GB. The amount
less depends on the actual system configuration. To fully utilize 4GB or
more of memory requires a 64-bit enabled processor and 64-bit operating system

Which they put in tiny print and hard to notice too ! clever people. But I
m presuming you won't notice much loss in power from this as from all the reviews and owners of the M1730 it's a pretty powerfull machine.

You will need a 64bit OS to use all of the 4gb of memory. If you have a 32bit OS it will only see around 3.2-3.4gb. If you have 32bit Vista and upgrade to SP1, which done through Windows Updates, it will see that 4GB is installed and will tell you but will not be able to use all of the 4GB due to the limit of a 32bit OS.

Can not be fixed for 32bit windows. The address space for videocard subtracted from the addressable RAM. So the more viedomemory you have the less (from 4GB) usable RAM you have. Only 64bit windows can use 4GB with some chipsets.
Here MS explanation
