Okay. So Im getting all psyched up to order the 4780 and My brother in law poses these questions/opinions. So I thought I would present them to you and see what you (current owners have to say)

He says that buying a laptop with a "Desktop" CPU isnt the best idea in the world becase: 1. It will run REAL hot 2. Battery life will absoulutely suck. 3. It may be VERY noisy because of the fans required to cool the laptop.

So here are my questions before I buy the laptop:
1. (This is important) How long will the battery on the 4790 last:
A. Watching a DVD on a plane lets say.
B. Playing something like FS2004 (Taxing piece of software)
C. Doing general stuff. (you name it.)

2. How HOT exactly does the 4780 get. (I am getting the fastest of the P4s). Anyone with a CPU Temp monitoring program?

3. Is this thing really noisy or what?

4. I will be traveling with this laptop, I know its big, and I dont have that much of a problem with it, but my brother-in-law says Ill change my mind once I get it. What do you guys think. (When I am traveling, the laptop back will NOT be on my shoulder, but placed on my rollerbag. (strap over the handle, bag sitting on top of the bag.) So I dont think weight will be an issue.

Okay. Lets have at it. (anyone with a 4780 or equivelent (at least in size and wieght.))

Thanks,

Heat-Not bad

Nose-no more than a regular desktop

Battery life-1 to 1.5 hours

Weight-not bad, im weak and still am able to carry it around

Temps-Fans cool it down to 50°C untill it reaches 60°C then the fan kicks on for approx 3-5 mins.

Thanks Beachbum,

Does anyone know if there is a longer life battery out there?

No, I don't believe so, but there are stuff to do to cut down on power consumption, like turn down the brightness on the LCD...etc.

Shutting down and "reducing" everthing that you can really won't give you a lot of added battery life - IMHO. Maybe 5/10 minutes at most.

If battery life is a MAJOR concern, then most of the "high performance" configurations will not work for you. If your criteria is to be able to watch a full length DVD on an airplane under battery power, you will need to look at a Centrino/P4-M processor such as the the Sager NP3760.

From what I can "gleen" and what is "not stated"; your BIL may be correct. The "higher capacity" machines that do not provide good longivity under battery power may not be for you. They are truely "sweet" as a desktop replacement; however, don't work for very long on battery power - especially under heavy load (might even be less than 35 minutes).

For game play the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is what is important. Overall, I'd look at a NP3760 "type" of machine and think that it would suit you better. Run those "specs" by your BIL and see if his comments and observations change.
