Gaming Laptop Upgrade Advice Needed

Thread Starter
Greetings all,

I have Dell Inspiron E1705 with a T2400 Centrino Duo and an Nvidia 7900GS graphics chip.

I am looking to upgrade and have been looking at a number of options with Ndivia 8600, 8700 and 8800 series GPUs. I need to look at something around $1500 +/- $200 or so. It seems that most of the options, including from Dell, use either the 8600 or 8700 Nvidia chips.

So, are any of these a worthy upgrade over the 7900GS? A search on this has found a few comments that the 8600 might be about the same but I haven't found anything definative.

Any comments, suggestions, thoughts or models to consider?

Regards,

Rick

You'd need a notebook with an Nvidia 8800M to outperform yours graphically, and I think they all cost more than your budget.

Agreed, 8600 is a crappy graphics card if you're a gamer...8700 is almost decent, but still doesn't beat your 7900GS...and the 8800 will be the only thing in the 8xxx series that will beat your GPU.

I went from your lappy to an M1730 with 8700M SLI and it feels better, but not ballistically better.

So maybe try and get one with an 8800 in it, but downgrade the hard drive and maybe some other components so its within your price range (if it can be done) and then get better parts off Newegg to save money.

Scratch that, I just looked and the only thing that comes with an 8700M GT is the XPS M1730...which starts around $2,500.
Even the M1530 doesnt get higher than an 8600...lame.

You may want to check out Sager notebooks here: http://www.sagernotebook.com/categor...id=&lcdsize=17

...they're NP5793 seems like a pretty sweet deal...

$1784 gets you:
17" 1680x1050 screen
Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 2.10GHz 3Mb L2 cache
Nvidia 8700M GT @ 512mb DDR3 video memory
2gigs RAM @ 667MHz
Vista Home Premium
80gig 5400rpm HD
8x DVD drive
Intel 4965 AGN wireless card
bluetooth
fingerprint reader

Cheers
