THey are a little difficult to use and it's not like they are the screen of an iPhone. you really need to put your finger over the entire button and press. You dont have to press hard. They should be working out of the box.

I've heard heat(from playing games, etc) will make the touch buttons unable to work.

Where'd you hear that? The volume controls are touch sensitive and although they may be difficult to use sometimes, they still work while in game.

Here's two tips on how to optimallly use the touch controls from some NBR members..

a lot of people have reported that the control is very unresponsive. I actually don't have many problems with mine.

all of the touch controls on the right of the alien head just require holding my finger there for about half a second for them to activate/deactivate

the volume slider on the left woks best for me if i just place one finger flat (not just the fingertip) onto one end of the slider, wait half a second, and then slide to the other side in one smooth motion... just pick your finger up when you want to stop. It usually takes me 2 swipes to move from one extreme to the other. I just use that to gauge how far i need to slide. over all it's not the best (and not as good as the one on the HPs i've used) but it works fine... just not good for finer adjustments.

PLACE ALL FINGERS ( minus your thumb ) on the volume slider. move left to decrease volume and right to increase volume. keep working at it, you will get it soon. for the alienfx, best you can do is to press the FN key + the alienfx f button on the top right of the keyboard, that turns off most of the lights.

I know it shouldn't require this much of concentration/effort but that's what current owners have to deal with..

Well the controls weren't enabled for some reason. When I took it out of the box, I was showing my bro what these buttons do. I told him watch what this does. I was holding the alienware control center button but nothing happened. Not even the volume or wifi. So I went into msconfig and checked every box that wasn't checked. Then I restarted and it worked. I also didnt get my ball cap.

Wow. Sorry to hear that. It's unlike AW not to include the simple stuff like the hat. And weird how msconfig was completely disabled. Glad you got it working tho.

It funny, with a MAC OSX testing on my M15x the controls worked flawlessly.

In Vista they are a PIA.

They sent my hat in a separate shipment along with my m9750, so just ask them if they can send it to you.
