hi all... just recently bought an asus f5sl-ap013 notebook with the following specs and the hard drive is constantly at around 50 degrees celsius. i'm running vista ultimate and i play world of warcrarft quite a lot... right a few minutes ago, when i logged out of the game, the hdd temperature was 56 degrees celsius. been reading that it's on the borderline of being too hot and unstable. is this reason enough to return the laptop? it's not even a full week since i bought it.

Is the notebook well-ventilated?

well, i guess so... it has little feet it sits on and there's always around 3-4 mm between the table and it's bottom side

it's right on the edge of too hot, but not really getting much over it. If it keeps going above 55, I'd call Asus about it. If not, it should be fine. My hard drive has gotten up to 55 before as well, even though it typically stays in the 40s.

i called the asus hotline and asked the dude that answered what is the optimal temperature a notebook hdd should run at. he said he didn't know. then when i said mine runs at 50-58 celsius he said that i have no way of knowing this because no asus laptop has hdd heat sensors and that the readings i get from all the apps i've tried are wrong.

finally he said that even if my laptop is warm/hot i should not worry as it's normal.

wtf. was he on dope?

Disks have builtin temperature sensors (readings accessible through SMART interface) for several years at least. The tech support guy is clueless, obviously. I have HD in my laptop running typically at 38-41 degrees C, getting up to 45 degrees during a long defragmentation. In my previous laptop, HD was running at 44-47, with highest reading at 50 degrees. It depends on particular HD model and laptop design. Still, 55 is too high IMO.

if it's going above 55 on a regular basis, then it's overheating, plain and simple. Try calling back again and if you get the same guy ask for his manager or someone else.

My compaq's HDD stays at 46 as normal and when on gaming it raised to max 55. It shouldn't cause serious damage to the HDD but the heat will do bad to the mainboard. My compaq's mainboard has officially blown up. =.=;

Based on HDD temp sensor software anaysis 58 is the critical temp.
