what to expect from m1730?

Well I recently made a trade deal with a NBF admin and I was wondering what I should expect to see with the m1730. I saw some people's 3dmark05 scores to be only about 8500 is that right?
these are the specs

XPS M1730 Smoke Grey
T7500 CPU 2.2Ghz 4MB Cache (Merom)
4 GB of Ram (
Geforce 8700 GT SLI 512MB Dual Config
160GB 7200 RPM Seagate Hard Drive (room for a 2nd Drive)
8X DVD+RW Drive
Intel Wifi 802.11B/G
Dell 360 Truemobile Bluetooth Card
17 Inch LG Truelife Screen WUXGA 1920x1200 Res
Vista Home Premium

I'm thinking that the processor might bottleneck it. My current m170 gets around 7000 in 3dmark05.
I have also heard mixed reviews on this laptop. Some people are saying it is awesome others hate it. I will not be moving it around a lot so I don't have a problem with the size of the laptop. But will I be disappointed with the performance increase over my m170?
I did research this laptop before the trade and I do think the trade was fair so I won't be mad if it isn't what I expect, but I do want to know.

Well I can't speak for the 1730 people out there, however the specs looks pretty good besides the cpu and the gpu.

The CPU you won't really notice too much (in fact its way better than the Pentium M 2.0), however I believe the 7800 would go against the 8700 pretty well (since the game support for SLI is not the best from what I hear).

3dmark05 should be way higher than that. i get 8325 or so in 3dmark06. its a good laptop overall. the 8700's will be the bottleneck if anything. but i've got them too, they arent too bad, but def not the 8800's!

that is good to hear that I should get way more than 8000 for 3dmark05. I do see that you have a core 2 extreme in yours. The one I'm getting is only a 2.2 ghz.

I think I'm going to be satisfied with my desktop I'm building this summer. It will at least have some quad core, 9800gx2, and 4gb ram. don't know any other specs at the moment but I expect my desktop to kick ass, at least I hope it does.

there have been a few on here without the xtreme processors and they get around 8000 on 06 as well. i think you got a good deal.

What does everyone get with the 8800GTX SLi?
i think mcfly has gotten one of (if not the best) score out there, somewhere around 11k if memory serves me right. he overclocked them a little, but even stock, they should hit around 9-10k.

Its not a bad laptop at all. The CPU is fine, dont worry, and the 8700's should do you just fine for some games, maybe turning down a few settings.

M1730 w/8800GTX SLI = ~13,000 on 3DMark06 w/stock drivers and stock clocks...

Wow, what CPU do you have hammer?

Man,that cpu must make a big difference, mine only gets 11078 with the standard drivers/clocks.

I did mine with the free version default to 1280x1024.

Cpu test is pretty painfull to watch at 0-1....maybe 2 fps

You use XP still hammer?

cpu makes a big diff.

I get 11.5k with 1 card and my q6600 overclocked to 3ghz 1333mhz fsb.

stock clocks on gpu. on my d901c

You didn't give us a comparison diefool. People like me that don't use 3dmark06 can't really interpret this. I know 10k+ is good but what do you get with the CPU at stock frequencies. Just curious as I already know that 3dmark06 is way more cpu dependent than 3dmark05.

I was saying that overclocking cpu makes the 3dmark score bigger.

Certainly seems that the cpu makes a big difference in 3Dmark06.

Got to sort of wonder how good a benchmark it is really,as running this benchmark with SLI disabled gives a score of about 9200 and just over 11000 with SLI enabled, but in games using FRAPS it shows a pretty consistent 50% increase in avg fps on my XPS with sli enabled compared to the 20% increase 3dmark is saying.

3Dmark is the first gaming app I've used, where the cpu usage on both cores is at 100%,where as,in most games the cpu usage seems to hover around 60% ....according to the gamepanel thingy.....the older single core stuff, used to stay pinned at 100% usage when playing a game....I guess game developers still aren't utilising both cpu cores properly yet?

3DMark06 is just a reference.. what is really important is the FPS in actual gaming. My buddy using the M1730 X9000 with 8800 SLI and connect with a 30" LCD for his AutoCad and playing COD4, Crysis...etc. That is GREAT!!!! That is why I am getting one, but I prefer the Samsung 24" LCD instead of 30" LCD. I am not in CAD field, but mostly in gaming, excel and photoshp with video editing.

The X9000 when OCing has about 10% performance increase over X7900 at same speed base on his lappy. He got the X7900 earlier, but Dell switch him a X9000 just few weeks ago. He can felt the speed over CAD and Photoshop due to the larger 6MB L2 cache.
