School Computer sparked.

One of the school computers had sparked and almost set fire. Smoke came out the back of the air vents and the sparks where more like small explosions or fire crackers. Reason being, one of my mates moved the little red switch located besides the power supply and then supplyed power back to the computer rendering it use less. But the question is why would this happen, it has been troubling me ever since the incedint (a while back).

what do you mean by "moved the little red switch"?

I had been doing some research and I think the red switch located beside the main switch at the back of the computer is to change the voltage from 110/115 to 220/230, most computers have a sticker over the switch (at least my desktop does.) I am not sure so correct me if I am wrong but changing the voltage from 220/230 to 110/115 would most likly have caused the computer to spark, right?

Hee, hee, hee. Playabstation said, "mates", so Ima guessing not in the land of a new rising sun...dammit I meant 117VAC 60Hz!

Yeah, moving that lil red 'un from 220VAC 50Hz to 120VAC 60Hz would be just like the Houston (Redneckville) concert "Focus and Joe Walsh" back in 1975, when Focus came out yodelin' Hocus Pocus and everyone was anticipating Joe Walsh.

Then again, moving it from 120VAC 60Hz to 220VAC 50Hz would be more like immediately after The Rolling Stones Cotton Bowl concert back in da' sebenties! "Oooh...Ahhh!" Now them was some good fireworx!

Siriusly tho'...don't ever wanna move the Primary Power/Mains input switch when plugged in to the wall.

The reason I started this subject was because other students have now found it funny to dilebratly destroy the computers using this method.

The first incident which I had explained previously happened because some idiot brought up the subject that his computer blow up (literaly), when he moved the switch, being my usual self I disagree with most people unless they have facts to prove it. The guy sitting next to me happened the same issue and wanted to prove it (how stupid?). Which he did and destroyed the computer. When the computer sparked and almost set fire the noise of it was extremly loud (like a shotgun), everyone in the class instantly looked at the arabic student.

Have the school charge them for the repairs for intentional damage. I'm sure they'll stop finding it funny.

Schools over here do.

Okay, I am not trying to be raciest, by all means no. Some people these days think just because of what is happening or happened is caused by every individual of that certain race.

As for damages the school would not have proof of who did what or if it was deliberate damage. Besides i do not think people care if they get caught or not. I for one do not want some one trying to blow up my computer while i am working on it.
