M90 system replacement is M6300?

One of my coworkers and computer gaming buddy has been having issues with his Dell Precision M90 notebook where two times in a row now four months apart his power port stopped charging his battery and the M90motherboard had to get replacement to fix the issue.

Well now it turns out the issue has popped up a third time and so I told my buddy of Dell's policy of allowing a system replacement after the third occurance of a similar issue under warranty. Now after some persuasion via Dell chat Dell small business has issued a system replacement request for the system.

His M90 is a 2GHz C2D, 2GB ram, 160GB 7.2rpm, 512MB FX2500 graphics thats covered by a four year completecare warranty.

Since the Precision M90 models have been discontinued for close to 6 months now, it would seem that he should be getting a refurbished M6300 soon right?

If thats the case, what are his chances of getting or after some arguing, receiving a M6300 with the 512MB FX3600 graphics (8800 based) rather than the much slower 512MB TurboCache (256MB discrete) FX1600 graphics which is based on the 8700GT core?

It would seem a FX2500 (which is basically a 7900GTX) should be much faster than a FX1600 since in most bench marks a 7900/7950GTX is similar in performance to a twin SLI 8700GTs and so should be significantly faster than a single 8700GT.

Has anybody been in the same situation recently of having dell replace their defective M90 notebook with a FX2500 or FX3500 with a M6300 and being stuck with a slower FX1600?

well technically if you go by benchmarks then the fx1600m is equal to the fx2500m (see notebookcheck). The problem is that 3dmark benchmarks dont necessarily equal real performance so idk; the guy here that is working on getting the 3600m working on his e1705 said that the 1600m was slightly faster than his 7900gtx so i guess it really depends on the game/app.

Exactly. It depends on which game you play. In general I would prefer the FX2500 but there are times when the 1600M can match or be better. Therefore, I'd probably strive for the FX3600M.

not to mention the quadros are opengl-optimized versus geared for gamers like the geforce cards. powerful, but in varying ways

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll keep you guys posted on any updates to my buddy's replacement system in the coming weeks.

Does anybody know if there might be a chance his defective M90 could be replaced with another refurbished M90? It sounds like getting a FX3600 in a M6300 is a pretty long shot since it can be argued the FX1600 is similar to the FX2500 performance wise so the best tactic might be for my buddy to try and argue for a M90 with another FX2500 or maybe FX3500.

Its Dell. You might be able to argue a number of points. Dedicated memory sizes, the model number is "lower" (you can finally use this against them hehe), 128-bit bus, etc.

Its and easy argument the FX2500 and FX3500 used full 512mB Discrete mem which iss something the FX1600 lacks.

Good points all! Definitely good tactics to use if it turns out he is slated for a M6300!
