It looks like the rumors that SP3 would come out by the end of the month were correct.

Microsoft will meet its "first half of 2008" release window for Windows XP SP3, as the entire rollout schedule will be complete by June 10. According to Neowin, Microsoft began support for SP3 yesterday and will send out the OEM version, as well as open it up for volume licenses, MSDN subscribers and Technet subscribers.

The release version will be available on April 29, allowing users to access it with Microsoft and Windows Update, as well as in the company website's download center.

Users who have their preferences set up for automatic updates will receive the service pack update on June 10.

Or if you want it before April 29th, you can get it from MSDN and TechNet on April 21st, if you want to wait till June 10, 2008: Windows Automatic Updates

friggin Sweet. I'm pumped for this. XP is so stable on my PC. I can't remember the last time I had a BSOD. It just sucks that when they finally get a stable Os they have a brand new one they are trying to push.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Released to Manufacturing

Quote:
Today we are happy to announce that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) has released to manufacturing (RTM). Windows XP SP3 bits are now working their way through our manufacturing channels to be available to OEM and Enterprise customers.

We are also in the final stages of preparing for release to the web (i.e. you!) on April 29th, via Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center. Online documentation for Windows XP SP3, such as Microsoft Knowledge Base articles and the Microsoft TechNet Windows XP TechCenter, will be updated then. For customers who use Windows XP at home, Windows XP SP3 Automatic Update distribution for users at home will begin in early summer.

Thanks to everyone here who installed the public betas – you not only gave us detailed feedback but also helped each other out with timely troubleshooting. Through the beta program we found several important issues and were able to confirm some essential fixes. We couldn’t have done this without you.

We will still be monitoring this forum during the next few weeks in case you have more feedback about the release of Windows XP SP3.

On behalf of myself, Shashank Bansal and Windows Serviceability, many thanks.

it is the final build.

there are talks about "delaying" SP3 in windows updates function - one can still manually download the final build

reasons:
. RMS (Retail Management System) product customers
. there is incompatibility of this m$ product with XP SP3 AND Vista SP1
. m$ is working to build in the check into XPSP3 and VistaSP1, so that RMS product customers will not see the update via Windows Updates
. once this check is in place, then the service packs wiill be made available to Windows Update

quote:
"Microsoft, which last week targeted Tuesday, April 29 for public distribution of XP SP3, is preparing to block PCs running Dynamics RMS from downloading XP SP3 and Vista SP1 through Windows Update and the Download Center, the spokesperson said.

Once that block is in place, Microsoft will release Windows XP SP3 to the public through Windows Update and Download Center. "Until we have published a fix for this issue, we advise Microsoft Dynamics RMS customers to not install either service pack," said the spokesperson. "

update:
. 2nd day running still smooth,
. (my) usb devices - webcam, printer, mouse, kboard, external burner, external drive, usb hub) are performing much better. In regards to external drive, files transfer and files access seem to be improved
. network, line drop recovery is also quicker and transparent (using this in a network environment)

observation:
. a clean install is recommended (not needed) - one can gain back 500-1000MB of diskspace, when applying SP3 right after SP2 (no windows patches or updates in between)

cheers ...
