I finally got home so I can pin-mod my 1.7 Dothan I received today, and it was a success!
I’ve notice this CPU runs cooler than the 1.73 I had in before the pin-mod, which makes it that much better. I’m now a part of the 2GHz+ club, and it sure feels good. I will run 3dmark01, 03 and 05 to compare the scores to what I had with the 1.73. No need to overclock the video card, since I’m running everything on high or ultra settings anyway without the pin-mod.
Didn’t notice much if any doing normal use between the mod and the 1.73. The difference came in gaming, and I do mean FPS difference.
Quake 3 now defaults at maxfps 999, and usually tops out at 986 (didn’t hit 1000). Quake 4 Ultra settings; now show me the 100fps mark every now and then. FEAR and COD4 demo really kicks butt in Ultra and max settings, all tested at 1024x768. For some reason, I forget to test 1280x800…I guess I’m just accustomed to setting everything at 1024x768 on the laptop.
3DMark scores averaged 500 to 800 more, except 05. Really thought I would hit the 4500+ mark, but didn’t. Default settings for my DDR 1 6800go is only 350/700, so I guess it’s expected.
The fun is over, until I get a 7800GTX when they hit the $120 mark. This is old news for most, but I had fun doing it.
