I'm looking at buying a new laptop and found this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834220306

How do the specs look to you guys, and is it a good deal for the price?

edit: Also, will this thing output 5.1 audio if I hook it up to my sound system? Does any laptop do this?

Specs looks nice, what are your uses? Mind you ASUS notebook's battery life is not top class.

With regards to 5.1 audio, by the looks of it, it doesnt seem to have optical output, so thats most probably a no, you might need a external sound card, USB or Expresscard.

I just want something all-purpose that will last me a few years of college. Homework and watching movies and music. I listen to music constantly, and have the 5.1 speakers, so I figured combining that with this system's big hard drive would be nice.

I don't need a high-end gaming rig, but I also don't want something that will get me laughed out of the room a couple years down the road.

How much battery life are we talking, by the way?

Do you have any recommendations on a USB sound card? I know for sure I will be playing a lot of music through this thing if I get it.

Battery life...around 2 hours. If you have no intentions in playing games...then there is no need for a dedicated GPU. You might want to have a look at the Creative X-Fi external which is a Expresscard sound card. Depending on how much of a audiophile you are...these things gets a bit pricey lol.

The standard battery in it is 6-cell 4800 mAh, good for about 2 hours 10 minutes at best. You can get 9-cell 7800 mAh (as far as I remember) battery for it. That will get you closer to 3 hours but not there yet. Also, the battery would stick a bit from that back of laptop. Use RMClock to undervolt the processor and you may squeeze a bit more battery time.

According to Asus' global site, it's got SPDIF, so it will work fine with your 5.1 stereo system. http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1...07&modelmenu=2
