Now CMOS battery needs replacement?

I just posted about my 4500 mah battery for my older satellite 2410 needing replacement as it does not keep the charge and the amber light remains on.
Our own fault as we did not keep it plugged in.

I just got settled with the idea of where I am going to buy it and the cost and now I boot up and get the message that the CMOS battery is gone.
I had to change the date and time and then went to use it again and the same message.
I now realize that I have to keep this notebook plugged in and operational after I do the replacing of these parts as I still do use this Pentium mobile little work horse and don't want to let it sit idle as we did.
However I am wondering what else this CMOS battery operates?

I have been told that it is a small item that the tech has to go into the motherboard to replace and it takes about a half hour? Does that sound right?

I deal with a store that does only laptops and nothing else. Again I will be replacing with a Generic brand and not a Toshiba battery as the cost is double or is there a reason that I should replace this particular battery with a Toshiba one??

I look forward to experienced users comments, thank you.

Having said all of this about my battery problems, I gather that I should keep this unit hooked up and charging all of the time>

1. The CMOS battery basically just keeps a charge going into the bios so that the latter rememebrs the settings (inlcuding the time/date). When the battery dies, the computer just "forgets" all of these settings and goes to the factory defaults (and of course throws you an error message to let you know).

2. Sounds right. It is very small and a piece of cake to change if you can get close to the motherboard. In the cases I've seen in my tecras, I've been able to get at them pretty much just by removiong the KB and maybe the palmrest area. 1/2 Hr seems about right.

3. It doesn't matter. Even the regular batterys on Toshiba laptops contain cells that are not made by Toshiba. In the end the CMOS battery might have a Toshiba stamp on it, but I'm positive that the bettery itself wasn't manufactured by them. Also considering the age of the laptop, just get what the tech recomends, assuming you have reason to believe he's on the level.

Odd, as I followed the change in the settings e.g. date and time and exited and it was re set and I have used it several times since and no CMOS battery error>>

Maybe a glitch? What is the lifetime of this battery>

Also my main battery the 4500 mah is taking a charge and lasts for 2 hrs plus,,,this is my satellite 2410 that I have used since 2003??

All just possibly coincidence? as I only use the notebook off and on or should I take it in and get the parts replaced?
Seems strange as I only had this occur once for the main battery and once for the CMOS battery?

All experienced comments appreciated, thank you

I think that if the main battery has a charge, then it will use that to charge the cmos battery if necesary. *note that I said "I think"* I'm not positive.

I've had the same thing happen when I left my old 8100 unplugged for extended periods of time. Both batteries were dead and it gave me the cmos error when I started it up. But from there on it wouldn't happen as long as it got plugged in every once in a while.

Should you replace it? Only you can tell if it's worth it to or not.

Thx for the reply, I keep plugging in the satellite 2410 once a week now and all is well with the battery life for the main computer as well as the CMOS.
Thank you.
