Dell XPS M1530 Audiology 101

I have just ordered the M1530 with a number of bonuses. I own an Edifier R251 5.1 surround sound system which I currently have jacked into my desktop via a Sound Blaster Live 5.1 sound card.

I want to know if I can hook my sound system up to my new M1530 when it arrives but so far no one can give me a sure fire answer.

Would appreciate any advice here...

BTW - my first post

the standard m1530 has no multiple channel sound card just the basic stero output in front (2x) and a microphone input hole.

so no 6 channel sound card, maybe the HDMI port supports it but that isn't something you can connect to a 5.1 speaker set

not correct, it is six channel, the three jacks on the front can be reassigned for six channel output

btw its something i covered in my review

Great review, THANKS.

This is from your review.

Audio
The audio is an Azalea HD Audio codec. The speakers themselves on the unit aren't very powerful, and sound somewhat tinny, though that will probably smooth out as the speakers get broken in.

There are three audio inputs on the front of the unit, and they can be configured to put out 6-channel audio fairly easily. Presumably the audio will output through the HDMI port as well, but I don't have an HDTV to test it with.
The HDMI does have audio out as I checked it yesterday with my Samsung 46" LCD TV. Works great for watching DVD's I have on an external HD or for just making a LARGE desktop to surf with.

Thanks for kicking off some discussion here and I agree, fab review. I was wondering about the HDMI port and whether I could get some kind of cable (ie HDMI to 3.5mm x3) that would allow me to connect my Edifier to my M1530. The thought of plugging cords in front-on is not so appealing.

The M1530 has the Sound Blaster Audigy HD insitu and I got the upgrade so to not have the capability for Hi-def sound is inconceivable in my mind.

yah i had noticed the HDMI port explicitly listed as one of the audio output ports in the control panel a few days ago, i hadn't looked into it too much when I wrote the review. i dont have a HDTV, as I said, but I have been using the HDMI port to connect to my 2007FPW so i have a little bit larger screen for watching my blu-ray movies on

Okay - so three jacks front on - 3 cables from my sound system's amplifier - blue, white, grey...what goes where?

Well...

I have answered my own questions.

I took delivery of my M1530 yesterday and spent a few hours last night fiddling around with. At this point all's I can say is that, for me, this l/p is a thing of beauty.

The sound issue that has been concerning me has been solved with almost a click of my fingers. There are two headphone ports on the front of my unit along with a microphone socket (all 3.5mm). These ports double as input/output and subwoofer ports for my 5.1 surround system. After a few minutes working out the configuration I was rewarded with the sweetest sound I think I have ever heard from my Edifier R251 speakers. The qulaity is absolutely mind blowing.

Tip - to test your speakers I highly recommend Andreas Vollenweider to really show off with - friggin' beautiful...

I'm pretty sure that there is an option for 6 channel sound in the sound configuration panel. I'm not at my L/T right now so I can't confirm that.

Can anyone confirm or deny the existence of a HDMI to analog converter box, device or doovalackie that I purchase?

Im currently running vista 64 bit.

if you have the required drivers installed...whenever you insert a plug into the jack...a menu should pop up asking you how you want to jack to function. i.e. an mic/line input or an audio output.
