1 Week with the Sager 5793

I've had my 5793 for a week now and am happy with it. I would be really happy but I've had one or two issues, mostly, I think, with Windows Vista 64.

I bought my system for software development work and not for games, so my config is:
  • T9300 2.5 GHz 6MB 800MHz
  • GeForce Go 8700M (because I don't game and it should run cooler)
  • 4096MB DDR2 667
  • 2.5" SATA 200GB(7200rpm) HDD
  • INTEL TURBOMEMORY 1024MB (because I wanted to try it out)
  • Windows Vista 64

I'm really happy with the appearance. It's not something I'll notice in a month, but it's a cool looking machine. I like orange.

The fans are quiet. I was worried about this one from other reviews. My 9860 is very loud and I could have handled anything at that volume or less. The 5793 is much quieter. I couldn't even hear the fans until I started doing some work on it. And I only notice if I'm thinking about it.

The finger print login is awesome. It took me a few minutes to set it up but it works great every time now.

Windows Vista is taking some getting used to. Some things are great like faster searches, prettier interface, better folder organization, etc.

Some things are annoying, like it wouldn't let me copy zip files off of my old computer when they were in my home directory. And the oh-so-helpful "you just tried to run this program ... do you really want to run that program?"

Also, sometimes it doesn't recognize my monitor on the DVI port correctly and just goes to a blank screen on both the laptop and the monitor and I can't seem to get out of it with the function keys or anything else and I've had to hard reboot twice.

Finally, some things just don't work. I use MySQL and the default install doesn't work at all. Some other tools I use likewise don't work out of the box on Vista 64.

But I think all of the problems are Windows Vista 64 related and not the Sager 5793. I hope most of these issues are solvable and few new issues will crop up.

So, the machine is really outstanding. Windows Vista 64 is a work in progress.

I agree. I'm reviewing it now, should be done by this weekend and having a blast with it. I don't agree with you on the fans being quiet tho. I find them loud, and on all the time.

Do you think the fan thing is a difference between the GeForce 8700 and 8800?

No. I think its the chassis. I also reviewed the 5791 (in my sig) and it did the same thing

Then I need to send you some MP3s of the sound of the 9860 v. the 5793 ... it's night and day.

Well I've never used a 9870 to compare it to, but I'm sure the technology has greatly improved since then.

My 5793 is a fine machine too.

I didn't have the talent and/or patience to make the right finger movement. So the fingerprint reader became annoying and was uninstalled...

Fans are on but not too loud but cannot be compared with the 9261 series.
